Eat more chips
GUELPH - Canadians are con-
suming more potato chips than ever
-- six pounds per capita per year.
That's a 35 -percent increase since
the early 1980s. Their passion for
light, crunchy chips bodes well for
the success of Saginaw Gold, a new
high-quality chipping and table -
stock potato, which will be availa-
ble to growers next spring.
Saginaw Gold is being released
jointly by the University of
Guelph, Michigan State University,
Agriculture Canada and the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
Its ability to consistently produce
light-coloured chips has earned it
top markets at Ontario regional po-
tato processing trials in the past
four years.
Anyone wishing to purchase
Saginaw Gold seed should contact
Agriculture Canada seed inspectors
for a seed growers' list .Seed stocks
arc also.bcing multiplied in Michi-
gan.
