Changes for water district
CLINTON - The Huron Soil and
Water Conservation District has set
up a meeting to outline some of the
changes which should be considered
when switching to a conservation
system. Topics covered include - A
System Approach - Where to Start
a Cropping Sequences - Adjusting.
Tillage to Soil Type - Weed Con-
trol - Barry Gordon - Fertility.
The meeting will finish with an
open discussion with a farm panel.
The farm panel members are Doug
Smith - Ridge Till; Laurence Tay-
lor - Conventional; and Jerry Jaretz-
ke - Mulch Till.
The meeting will be held on
March 14, 1989 at the White Car-
nation, Holmesville. It will begin
at 9:45 p.m. running until approxi-
mately 3:30 p.m. A fee of 55 is re-
quired to cover the cost of lunch.
Anyone interested shouldregister
by calling the•OMAF office, Clin-
tonat 482-3428 or 1-800-265-
5170.
We had many farmers try conser-
vation cropping in the 1988 season.
The successes "of these attempts
were variable. People with some
prior experience faired well yet peo-
ple in their 1st •or 2nd year had
some problem. These problems in
part can be attributed to climate,
but on the whole poor crop perfor-
mance was a result of missing one
of the keys to a conservation man-
agement package.
Conventional systems have taken
years to master and refine. Adopt-
ing a conservation system can't be
jumped into without some mis-
takes. What you can do to limit
your problems is to learn from
others.
