EXETER - The Exeter Petite
Ringette team started and finished
their semi-final playoff series
against Forest Thursday and Friday

place, Forest team.
The first game was played in For-
est, where the local squad made the
trip successful, winning 7-5.
After two minutes of play, Exeter
sctup a passing play from Leeann
Foster and Cara Gardner to Danielle
Miners, who whipped the ring into
the net.
Both teams played -tight ringette
until 27 seconds were left in thc
first half, when Sonya Lawrence set
Gardner up for her first. Gardner
struck again with Judi Wilson as-
sisting with three seconds remain-
ing in the first.
Amy Hill started the second half
scoring for Forest at 13:18. Miners
came back with two quick short-

of very fast-moving ringette.

Hawks one win away from .finishing off Thedford
EXETER - The Exeter Hawks
proved to themselves they can play
about 34 minutes of hockey and es-
cape with a win.
They proved it in the third game
of their best -of -seven, Western Jun-
ior D North Division quarter -final
playoff series Friday night against
the Thedford Lumberjacks at the
South Huron Rec Centre Friday
night. The Hawks took a com-
manding three -games -to -one lead in
the series by winning 5-1 in Thed-
ford Sunday afternoon.
Leading 4-3 after one period of
play on Friday, the Hawks played
some uninspired hockey in the sec-
ond period and found themselves
behind 5-4 after the second period
of play.
But fortunately for the Hawks,
Thedford also laid hack in the final
period although it looked like it
was going to he good enough for a
win, but Hawks Derek Shackleton
tied the game at 5-5 when he buried
a backhand over Thedford netminder
Mike. Sander's shoulder to tie the
game at 5-5 with under three min-
utes to play in the game.
Just when it looked like the game
would head into overtime, Hawk
captain Mark Morrissey took a
wrist shot from the point that
Sanders didn't see because of several
players screening him, got behind
Sanders with just 12 seconds to
play, which completed the come-
back and sent the home -town fans
happy. The win also gave the
Hawks a two -games -to -one lead in
the series:
While happy to escape with the
win, Hawk coach Jack Nairn said
he was not pleased with the way
the team performed in the middle
franc.

"Wc really went flat there in the
second period and it almost cost us,
but it was great to see the guys not
give up and come back the way
they did,' said Nairn.
. Nairn admitted the dramatic victo-
ry should be an important confi-
dence builder for the Hawks for the
rest of the series, while the Lum-
berjacks could easily be demoralized
by the loss, which may have been a
factor in the game on Sunday.
Jim Dickins found the scoring
touch twice for the Hawks in the
first period Friday night, once from
Larry Lewis and once from Lewis
and Jeff Ansems. Scott Bell opened
the scoring for the Hawks from
Dickins, and Bryan Quinn had the
other goal from Jean Paul Cousi-
neau and Doug Clark.
The Hawks outshot the visitors
28-26 in the game.
Sunday, the Hawks connectecrfor
three power -play goals en route to
the win and a commanding lead in
the series.
Scoring power play goals for the
Hawks were; Steve Dubarry unas-
sisted, Shackleton from David Dal-
rymple and Cousineau and John
Roseboom from Frank Wulterkens.
Mark Morrisey scored from Dubarry
and Counsineau scored from Clark
and Shackleton at even strength for
the Hawks.
Tony Peters scored for Thedford
10 minutes into the first period and
Hawks' Todd Campbell shut the
door on the Lumberjacks the rest of
the way, stopping 30 of 31 shots,
while the Hawks forced Sanders to
make 36 stops in the Thedford net.
The fifth and possibly final game
in the series will be played Friday
night at the South Huron Rec Cen-
tre at 8:30. If a sixth game is need-
ed it is tentatively scheduled for
Saturday night in Thedford and
game seven will be played Sunday
back in Exeter. Game time on Sun-
day was not known at press time.
Irish finding Mitchell tough to beat
LUCAN - The Lucan Irish are

team to beat at the Mitchell Arena
in their best -of -seven. Junior D
North Division semi-finals. After

to play those slow -penalty filled
games, which throws us off our
game."
Rcvington said the games in
Mitchell have dragged on for more
than three hours while the game in
Lucan have been finished in slight-
ly more than two hours.
