with win in fourth game 5-3
EXETER Even though the Elo-
ra Rocks lost 9-7 to the Exeter Mo-'
hawks Saturday night to fall be-
hind, three -games to none in their
best -of -seven Central Senior B
North Division finals, the Rocks
sent a message to the Mohawks
that they wouldn't roll over and
play dead.
Sunday in Elora, the Rocks
avoided a -sweep by winning the •
fourth game of the series 5-3.
The Mohawks went up 3-0 in the
series by winning the, opening
game 2-1 in overtime last Sunday,
February 26, winning the second
game last Wednesday -back in Elora
8-6, also in overtime and Saturday's
third game by thc.9-7 score.
Saturday night, the Mohawks
took a 5-1 lead into the first inter-
mission, the Rocks battled back to
make it a 6-4 Mohawk lead after
two periods, but the Rocks keep
rolling back and made the Mo-
hawks work for everything they
got.
Just when it looked like the Mo-
hawks were going to coast to an
easy victory, in the third after the
Mohawks took a 7-4 lead but the
Rocks answered back a few minutes
later.
After the Mohawks took an 8-5
lead, the Rocks came back to score
twice to cut the Icad to 8-7 and
pulled goalie Gary Trimble with
less than' a minute to play in favor
of an extra attacker to try and get
the equalizer but that backfired
when Gord Brooks scored into an
empty net to give the locals a 9-7
win, but the Rocks had set the
stage for Sunday's rematch.
Brooks had a pair of goals for the
Mohawks, as did Joe Scherer but
Bill Glover led the way with a hat
trick. Other goals went to Ron
'Goodhand and Kris Bedard.
Defenceman Barry Baynham as-
sisted on the first three Mohawk
goals, Brooks and Glover set up a

Scherer, Quincy Wilker, Mark
Soehner, John Kenrick, Al Gates,
Jeff Warren, Jeff McClenaghan and
Bedard
The Mohawks peppered two
Rock goalies with 47 shots on
goal, while Exeter's Rick Pikul had
another ,superb game stopping 30
of 37 shots that were directed his
way.
The Rocks took a 4-2 lead after
one period on Sunday and the two -
goal difference proved to be themar-
gin of victory in•the game for the
Rocks: Each team scored team
scored twice in the second period
and once in the final.
Scoring for the Mohawks :were;
Glover from Wayne Urbshott, Dave
Randerson from Scherer and Brooks
and Brooks from Glover and Bedard.

Last Wednesday, the Mohawks
jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one
period but the Rocks came to life in
the second and the game was dead-
locked 4-4 after the second period
and each team scored twice in the fi-
nal period, which set up the second -
straight overtime game in the series
and the third -straight for the Mo-
hawks, who finished off the Harris -
ton Blues in overtime.
In the first 10 -minute overtime
period, Jeff Shipley gave the Mo-
hawks a 7-6 lead when he scored
with less than a minute gone in
overtime and Jeff Warren added an
empty -net goal with just one sec-
ond left on the clock.
Other goal scorers for the Mo-
hawks were; Randerson from War.
ren and McClenaghan, Shipley
from Warren, Randerson from
Goodhand, McClenaghan unassist
ed, Randerson from Mark Soehner,
and Warren from from Shipley.
The fifth game in the series was
scheduled to be played back at the
South Huron Rec Centre yesterday,
(Tuesday) evening.

Panthers volleyball season wraps up

XETER - The South Huron District High School
Junior" tris' volleyball team participated in the final

The Panthers claimed five victories to cam a spot in
the western Ontario (W.O.S.S.A.) tournament Fri-

South Huron's first competitor on Tuesday was
Stratford Central, the eventual tournament champs.
Central dumped the Panthers two -games straight.
South Huron was defeated 15-11 in their first game
against Wingham's F.E. Madill but took the second
,game 15-9. Thg gilsap u aing E'rc>tfcrich
15-10 and -15-8.
• Tffc girt firrat-opponent in round-robin play was
Mitchell. The Panthers came back from a 12-4 deficit
to win 15-13. The Panthers also took a 15-6 victory
over the Blue Devils.
Following round-robin play, the Panthers advanced
to the final match against Stratford Central. Although
the girls were defeated in both games, they still man-
aged to advance to W.O.S.S.A. at Arthur Voaden in
St. Thomas.
Although the day was not a success in terms of vic-
tories, coach Jeff Balch felt his team played; "good
team volleyball and gained valuable tournament ex-
perience".
The team is looking forward to a successful 1989/
90 season.

Molting Hawks win only game of week
EXETER - Exeter Molting
Hawks won their only start of the
week, beating the East London Old
Sports 16-5.
Kcn Bergmann led the way
notching five goals, Bob Jones had
three goals, while Scott Burton ,
Bob McDonald each added two.
Ron Moore, Brian Hodgins, Ernic
Ahrens and Peter McFalls added one
each.
Bob Jones, Scott Burton, Ken
Bergmann and Ernie Ahrens each
had three assists. Ron Moore, Bob
McDonald, Walt Tiedeman, Peter
McFalls, Phil Turner, Brian Hod-
gins and Bill Pincombe each had
one assist.
This week they play in Lambeth
on Thursday against the Old Cana-
dians. -
On Sunday they travel to Hensall
and Monday they host Southwest
London Old Tractors.
