Hospital finances explained
EXETER Most hospitals, much
like South Huron, have a complex
system of funding and spending.
For example: South Huron has an
Operating fund, a Capital Fund and
a Foundation.
The operating fund is just that, a
group of incomes that are used for
the daily operation of the hospital.
The largest source of these funds
comes from the Ministry of Health
- approximately 80 percent. The
rest of the funds are from other in-
comes such as dietary recovery,
out-patient services, parking and
co -payments, just to list a few.
The money tor operations is
spent in the following manner: Sal-
aries and wages take up about 70-
75 percent of our expenses and vary
from one hospital to another.
Drugs and medical supplies 3-4 per-
cent, medical staff fee for services,
x-ray, pulmonary functions and
other medical expenses total ap-
proximately five percent. -
Other supplies and expenses, in-
cluding heating, hydro, legal fees,
food, cleaning supplies, repairs and
maintenance of equipment, etc. ac-
count for approximately 18 percent
of total hospital operational costs.
The capital fund comes from
three major sources; donations from
groups and citizens, depreciation in-
come and any excess revenues from
the operational sections that the
government allows us to keep.
The funds from these sources are
used for major .renovations,.addi-
tions or equipment purchases.
South Huron has established a pro-
cedure for purchase of major equip-
ment to ensure to the best_possible
extent that the proper equipment is
purchased. Due to the ever growing
concern over health care funding
each piece of new equipment is to
be looked at as a potential addition
to the:operational cost of the hospi-
tal.

arms in prayer.

of friends. According to Becky
Prout, one of the participants,
friends arc for helping you and lov-
ing you and for sharing with.
Sometimes friends influence you to
do bad things. Friends always for-
give you. Sisters and brothers can
be friends. .

The Hospital Board must ask -
"Can we afford the costs associated
with new equipment." .this holds
true with donations of equipment as
well, and for .this reason the policy
is in place that any donations of
equipment must be cleared through
hospital administration.
The Hospital Foundation is a
support fund for capital projects.
Many donors were concerned that
their financial contributions would
be used for operational funds and
not for new equipment and build-
ings. A foundation was the logical
ansHIer..lo this concern along with
fund raising responsibilities for
special needs as they arise.
South Huron Hospital has been
very fortunate over the past years,
with generous donations, along
with good money management, it
is presently financially sound.
There are many projects planned for
the hospital and as the final details
come into place the public will be
kept informed of the changes going
on at your hospital.
Sincerity resembles a spice. Too
much repels you and too little leaves
you wanting.
