HENSALL - How many people
remember when the Hensall-Ziirich
Combines won the Ontario Hockey
Association Junior "D" champion-
ship 25 years ago?
Several hundred fans who do re-
member were at the Hensall arena
Saturday night as 13 of the 16
members of the provincial title
winning team of 1963-64 were
back in action.
They were not disappointed as the
Combines showed the same fine
tuned and accurate passing alon
with sharp shooting as they did 25
years- ago in defeating the Hensall
Driftwoods oldtimers team by a
score of 8-3.
The Combines held a 4-2 lead af-
ter the first two periods of play and
in the final 20 minutess, according
to coach Bob McKinley "really
turned it on" as they outscored the
opposition four goals to one.
Bruce Cooper who was the scor-
ing star in the seventh and deciding
game against Stouffvillc 25. years
ago scored two goals Saturday
night as did Dennis Morrissey and
Bob Johnston.
In that thrilling final back in the
spring of 1964, Cooper scored two
goals in overtime anis Craig Chap
ng in 25th year
man added one as the Combines
beat Stoufville 10-7.
Chapman scored one goal and add-
ed four assists in Saturday's win.
The other goal came from the stick
of Joe Livermore.
Scoring for the Hensall oldtimers
„were Mike Soldan, Jim Consitt and
Doug McAsh.
Coach Bob McKinley proved he
still had the ability to inspire his
players Saturday night. Prior to the
game when jokingly asked what the
score would be, McKinley replied ,"
I don't know, but we will he out
there to win". And win they did.
McKinley said after the game, "
They haven't changed a bit. They
are still the_ same group of fine
young gentlemen they were 25
years ago. They gave their best at
all times."
The only absentees from the orig-
inal team were manager George
Beer and players Earl Wagner, Dale
Turvey and Butch Murney. They
were replaced by Bob Johnston and
Brian Bonthron.
The two goal tenders from 1963-
64 travelled the farthest distance to
participate. Dennis Amacher, a Bell
Canada employee in Kingston
turned in an excellent performance
anniversary
between the pipes and spare goalie
Rick Stade was a strong force on
defence. Stade is now a Sergeant
with the Royal Canadian Mounted
Police in Vancouver.
Two of the former Combines are
now school teachers. Steve Kyle
has been at the Langton Public
School for 25 years' and Joe Liver-
more teaches
ivermore'teaches in Blyth.
Bruce Cooper is Ottawa district
manager for the Bank of Montreal
and Russ Klopp is with National
Trust in Mississauga.
Craig Chapman is with Ontario
Hydro in Forest, Bill Shaddick is a
supervisor in the engineering de-
partment for the Region of Water-
loo and Dennis Morrissey is a har-
ness horse trainer and driver in
London,
Bruce Horton, a resident of Stan-
ley township works for Bell Cana-
da, Bill Chipchase is employed by
Hill and Hill Farms at Varna, Mike
Cushman of Centralia is with Laid-
law Transport and Bob Hoffman
farms and works with his father in
the funeral home business in Dash-
wood.
Mike Soldan of the Hensall Drift-
woods made many of the arrange-
ments for the exhibition game.
