SHIPKA - Another progressive
euchre party was held last Wednes-
day night at. Shipka Community
Centre.
Winners were ladies high won by
Don Russell playing a ladies card.
Ladies low - Evelyn Pickering,
men's high - Hugh Morenz, mens
low - Ross Pickering, ladies lone
hands - Annie Morenz, mens lone
hands, Bill Finkbeiner.
The town group were in charge of
arrangements and lunch.
There will be another euchre part
in two weeks on February 22.
Personals
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Comfort, of
Welland, visited a couple day;; last
week here. with Roy's sister, Mrs.
Eva Sweitzcr and other relatives.
Visiting Eva for a Valentine sup-
per, Sunday night were her grand-
daughters, .Kim and Kelly Camp-
bell, and their parents Jim and
Sandra, of Exeter.
Tom and Rosanne Russell,. (for -
•mer residents of this area), now of
Cottam, recently became parents of
another baby boy. A brother for
Jackic, Jenny and Michael, the 15th
grandchild for Cliff and Velma Rus-
sell, of Dashwood. The new baby
has been named Matthew David.
Hugh and I have visited recently
with Melvin and Gertie Stade,
Dashwood area and with Lorne and
Lorcen Devine at. Zurich. We en-
joyed solo games on both visits.
Mrs. Ortha Baker, accompanied
by her mother Mrs.Emma Schilbe,
of Zurich, and Bert Schilbe of Bay-
field, attended the funeral, Monday
February 6, of Mrs. Schilbe's sis-
ter, Mrs. Luella Gossman, at Jow-
ett Funeral home in Pt. Huron -
.
She is survived by a, son and
daughter, several grand and great
grandchildren, with six grandsons as
pallbearers. Mrs. Gossman was 93
the day she was buried.
Get well wishes are expressed to
Anna Heckman, of Dashwood, who
is a patient at South Huron hospi-
tal.

club girls met atItCarrie Wilhem's
home to begin the project,
"Working with Wool". The leaders
are Pat Brown and Brenda Love, and
the members are Jacqui, Lori, Ta-
mara, Lisa, Elizabeth, Connie, Car-.
ric and Heather.
Pat Brown demonstrated equip-
ment needed for knitting and Bren-
da explained the requirements of
this project.

laughter and enjoyment. A song
was played on tape that was cspe -
cially written for Mrs Violet Hardy,.
two years ago, for her 90 birthday-,
the words written by her grandson;
Jeff Culbert.
Mrs. Hardy was a former member .-
of Clandcboyc and Lucan W.I. and
is now a patient in Parkwood Hos-
pital, London.
Ruth Hill introduced guest speak-
er, Jackie Wells, V.O.N. who
spoke about a special project she is
-- working on. She explained about
Palliative Care and how London is
• financed for this care through Unit-
ed Way funds but outside the city
there is. no funds available for the
special care.
Often' a terminally ill .patient
could spend some time at home
with their family- providing there is
help available to assist with nurs-
ing care and other necessary help for -
'the family if needed
She was asking for volunteers;
donations, driving, helping with
. fund raising projects; etc. so this
Palliative Care could be made avail-
able to everyone.
Ruth thanked Jackie for coming.
Mary Scott conducted a Valentine
contest, won by Hazel Williams
and Velma Hardy to close the meet-
ing.

GRAND BEND The crowds,
the sun, the traffic line-ups at the
Colonial, Gables and local restau-
rants - summer timeat the Bend,
right? No! It's the height of the
Winter Carnival - winter's a beach
at the 'Bend. This event grows and
attracts more people each year, to
'the delight of everyone involved.
Carnival committee members,
Chamber of Commerce, local busi-
nesses, service clubs, all take a
well-deserved bow for a fantastic.
party. Of the 20 odd events in-
. volved, only the sled dog derby was
cancelled, due to lack of snow.
• That's quite a batting average for
such a light, open winter.
Now the crowds are gone again,
with only the sounds -of construc-
tion continuing to fill the cold
winter air, getting ready for sum-
mer. •
The. ORPHA club met at the Vil-
lage Chambers for the February 6
meeting, with -12 members present. -
Jean Clapperton read "Spectrum of
Love". to open the meeting. A let-
ter from Grand Bend Council was
read, allowing the ORPHA Club. to
use the council chambers during
thc winter months.

4-H Club
GRAND BEND - On Monday,
February 6, seven energetic, enthu-
siastic young girls from Grand
Bcnd II gathered at Marg Desjar-
dine's home to begin their 4-H pro-
jcct,; "Working With Wool - From
Fleece to Yarn."
The meeting was opened with the
4-1-1 pledge, and leaders Donna Lo -
vie and Marg Desjardine started
with an introduction.
Next on the agenda was the elcc-
tion•.of officers: President Jennifer
Weigand, .vice-president Michelle
Lovie, secretary Patti Desjardine
and press reporter Karen McKay.
Other members present were Sarah
Patterson, Linda La breche and
Dawna Erickson.
They were joined by a few volun
teers who were experienced in knit-
ting to "show them the ropes' or in
this case, the yarn. The experts
were Cassie and Catherine Lovic.
and Jo Gillian. Evidently they need-
ed all the help they could get, knit-
ting and purling:After two hours of
frustration, they adjourned the meet-
ing, with the assurance that
"practice makes perfect".

6 at the Village Chambers and El-
len Couts read a poem "Closing
Thoughts". Members brought their
own refreshments.
The World Day of Prayer Service
will be held at Immaculate Heart of
Mary Church in Grand Bend, on
Friday, March 3, at 2 p.m..All la-
dies are invited to attend this Ecu-
menical Service.
Grand Bend Nursery School had a
most successful food booth at the
Winter Carnival serving close to
100 hot dogs and 100 bowls of chi-
li. Kathy Dashford .of London was.
the winner of the Kettle Creek
sweatshirt.

Students in Ottawa

-VARNA-OnFebruary8- 10 the
. grade eight students from Huron
Centennial School went on a• bus.
trip to Ottawa. Students from Varna
and area attending. were Kevin
Mount, Mary Ellen Webster, Den-
nis Roy, Cheryl Stephenson and
Michael Hayter. -
They left early in the morning
and spent nine hours travelling on
the bus. Upon arrival they visited
the Supreme Court of Canada, went
ice-skating on the Rideau Canal and
viewed the Ice. Sculptures at Jacque
Cartier Park. •
The first night was spent at the
Chime Hotel in Ottawa. The second
day was the busiest. They toured
the Governor General's Home and
drove around Prime Minister Brian
Mulroney's home. They spent the
afternoon at the Parliament Build-
ings. For supper that night they
went to Sucrieie de la Montage for
a French dinner.
They toured on to Kingston and
spent that 'night there. While in.
Kingston they visited Old Fort
Henry, Sir John A. McDonald's
Home and the Marine Lake's Mu-
seum. -
.. Varna 4-H
The first meeting of the Varna 4-
H Club for the project "Working
With Wool" assembled at the home
- of Gail Turner on Monday evening
at 7 p.m. with 15girls in atten-
dance. The leaders are Gail Turner
and Vicki Wilder.
To begin the evening the officers
were elected. The president is Mi=
chelle Turner, vice-president is Mel-
ody. Turner, secretary is Julie
Steckle and telephone girls are
Brenda Consist and Julie -Healy.- -
After the election they divided
into two groups and the leaders
showed them how to cast on stitch-

Stan Lee Club
The Stan Lee Club met at the
Complex on February .8 with 20 -
people enjoying a delicious pot-
luck dinner. Jean McEwen and
Charles and Bcmice Reid were con-
veners of this month's activities..
Thanks to Jean McEwen who
braved the blustery night to provide
the table decorations and other
goodies: Red candles were on the.
tables, candles and red and white
floral arrangement graced the food
table.
Following the dinner everyone
had fun participating in a Valentine
Exchange. President Anna Keys
-gave a. reading on some humorous
vanatlons of the old -verse "Roses
are Red." . --
A number of. lucky draws wire
made. Harvey Hayter held the
lucky "Share the Wealth Ticket."
Anna mentioned how pleased
they were to have Keith Rowntree
and Elmer Hayter presentafter their
timein hospital. Both gentlemen
. expressed their appreciation for the
get well wishes and visits they had
received. .
Elmer Hayter, Zone President,
announced that the' spring -rally
will be held .in Scaforth on April
13,' •
Following the custom of previ-
ous years a Valentine King and
Queen were sleeted. Two people
with cupid stickers on their chairs
were to receive the honour. Marga-
ret Elliot and Charles Reid were
• the lucky people. Last year's royal
couple, Louise Ivanchenko and
Harvey Hayter, crowned the new
King and Queen.
• It was decided that as their usual
night is not available their March
meeting will be held on March 8 at
`8. p.m. •
Louise Ivanchenko announced
that Zurich Golden.agcrs will be -
having a euchre on Monday March
13 in the old Zurich Town Hall
with lunch provided. Cost is S2. •
Anna closed this part of the
meeting with a poem "Sixty-five
and Holding." -
Several games of euchre were
played with prize winners Bob
Stirling, -Mervyn Hayter, Louise
Ivanchcnko and Harvey Hayter,.
• Varna Youth Group meets at
7:30 a.m. at the church on Tues-
day, February.16.

daughter "Heidi" born on February

Allan Remington,- has.just re-
turned from a months business trip
to England. He reports while there
the_ weather was-mildandsunny.
The gardens were lovely with cro-
cuses and daffodils in full bloom.

EXETER - An error appeared

of Nelson Squire celebrating his
90th birthday.
His birthday was actually on Feb-
ruary 9. -The T -A regrets any incon-
