that would be special," said Lewis.
Lewis said although he didn't
think he felt any differently after he
won, he couldn't: believe the fuss
pe8plc were making oyer him after
'he had the gold medal around his
neck-.
. "I didn't feel any different, than 1
didbefore, but it was weird -because
you step off th ..podium and every- .
body was making a big fuss over
you,. taking pictures and things
like that. You find that all ora
sudden when you walk along the
street other people start -calling out
your name wanting to get to know
you, you• get more friends, .your
friends want to take you' over to
thcir house. It was.a lot more at-
tcntion than I was used to..I had to
get my phone number changed a
few times, but it was nice,:it was
.different."
The mood in the Canadian
Olympic village certainly changed
quickly after Johnson hao his gold
medal taken away.from him, accord-
ing to Lewis.
He said everyone wanted Johnson
to win because the Canadians hadn't
been doing quite as well as expect- -
ed. -People werc'doubting Johnson
after the first few qualifying runs,
saying that Carl Lewis would win,
but Lewis said he still• had a lot of
confidence in Johnson.
"When htwon everybody was
he needs a manager so he can get ready to fight Tyson
overjoyed. We really couldn't ex-
plain it and then after the little inci-
dent that everybody knows about,
there was a'big let down. Every-
thing was dead in the village. h was
a disappointment'not only for Can-
ada, but tor Ben too.
The boxirfg in the 1988 Olym-
pics were plagued with problems.
One American fighter failed to
show up for his fight on time, one
Korean boxer sat in the ring by

hin3self tor more than an hour after
'losing the fight in protest, and one
Korean coach nearly started a riot
after hitting a.referee after his fight-
er lost.
Through all that, Lewis said he
refused to let himself be fazed or
distracted.
"For me being in the heavy
weight class and it being my second
time in the Olympics, 1 had to
make sure the reason for me staying
was the right one because I didn't
want to go all the way to get ripped
off by any judges or referees. I
stayed most of the time in my
room staying focussed making sure
'I wouldn't catch a cold, just really
keeping to myself, making sure I
was in really good condition, all
my weaknesses would be my
strengths."
I said he felt good about the situa-
tion personally because he won but
added he felt bad for some of the
other boxers:
• Winning the heavyweight gold
medal put Lewis in with some elite
company like Mohammed Ali and
George Foreman. Lewis said he
. plans to follow in their footsteps
by winning the heavyweight cham-
pionship of the world.
Before he can do that he has to
tum professional, which he plans to
do whenfie finds a manager. He re-
cently returned from Las Vegas

managers that were interested in
him. Although he was still undecid-
ed, he said he was leaning towards
Emmual Lewis in the Kronk Gym
from Detroit, who also manages
Thomas Hearns.
,A good manager would be some-
body he would have good chemistry
with a.someone he gets along with
a somebody he could trust.
Lewis noted boxing is becoming
more and more like a business all
the time -and if someone paid him
$3 million to fight Mike Tyson
next week he would do it because it
is a lot of money and although he
said he is not ready to fight Tyson
right now because he hasn't fought
since the Olympics, but would get
himself ready in a week.
Although. Tysok has won every
fight easily, Lewis claimed npt to
intimidated by him.
"He is definitely stoppable. He is
human just like you and me but the
only filling is he is coming up at
the right time, everybody else is
getting old. There is a lot of young-
er guts coming up and that will
give 'Mike Tyson a run for his
money".
Tyson has a title defence later this
month against British heavyweight
champion Frank Bruno and al-
though many say Tysonshould win
easily, Lewis said don't bet a0ainst
Bruno.
Lewis said Tyson .might be vul-
nerable right now because of all his
personal problems and he hasn't
fought for nine months, the longest
layoff of his career.
"Tyson has the attitude if some-
one across the ring is coming at
you, he says kill or be killed and
that makes him a great fighter".
