throughout the game.

Combines planning 25 year reunion game
By Mike Soldan
Do you remember the Hensall
Fire Department spraying the steel
roof of the old arena to keep it cool
for the big game that night? Do
youremember the crowds standing
outside until game time so the
building wouldn't heat up? Do you
remember standing room only?
'Do you remember streams of cars
heading back to Zurich or north to
Clinton after the game? Do the
names Shaddick, Wagner and Over-
holt ring a bell? Do you remember
the seventh game overtime goal that
won the championship? Do you re-
member the fog and the puddles on
the icelate in the third period?
Do you remember Bob McKinley
and George "Bunt" Bccr on the
bench? Do the names Strathroy,
Uxbridge and Stouffvillc kindle
memories? - -
Well if you ever bought a ticket
to a Combine game you will have
shared some of these memories.
Hockey fans where are you? Whcrc
are the thousands that followed the
Hensall Zurich Combines through
the 1960's.
The Hensall Zurich Combines
won the Ontario Junior "D" cham-
pionship -in the 1963-64 season.
During their reign in junior hockey
they were in several Ontario finals.
Some of the best.hockey entertain-
ment anywhere was provided in
those exciting years..
Bob Johnson; a former Combine
explained junior hockey the way he
saw it: "Junior hockey was not as
commonplace as it. is today. Much
more emphasis was placed on devel-
oping Midget and Juvenile hockey.
Johnston along with Larry Bedard,-
Earl Wagner, Wayne. Willert and
Gerard Overholt to name a few vim
the Ontario Juvenile title in the
1960-61 season. At that point there
-was nowhere to go but to a junior
organization. Sorge of the Zurich
players had the.opportunity to go to
Goderich Siftos Junior B entry but
decided to try Junior.D with their ri-
vals
vals from Hensall. It seems at that
time some rivalry existed between
Hensall and Zurich.
In Midget and Juvenile hockey
who ever won their play, off round-
-usuallywent on to do well in
O.H.A. And so, Steve. kyle, Bill'
Shaddick and Bruce Horton along
with some of the Hensall Juveniles
finally wore the same colours and
the Combines were born. Two good
juvenile teams produced a junior
team that won 27 straight games
before losing out to Strathroy in the.
•
finals. By the 1963 season John=
stye Willert and Bedard were the
ripe old age of 21 and overage for
Junior Hockey. •
Clinton contributed just as much -
over the years. Butch Murney, Joe
Livermore and Bruce Cooper wore
Clinton products, who filled the
gaps as players retired. The Com-
bines became identified as .the
"Zurich Line", the "Hensall Line"
and the "Clinton Line". •
Johnston feels junior hockey is.
different now. "It's like what Juve-
nile hockey used to be. If you took
a pass with your head down then,
you'd be down on the ice doing the
worm."
Junior hockey in the 1960's pro-
duced a tremendous following of
Combine fans from Zurich, Hen-
sall, Clinton and surrounding areas.
These faithful fans made the road
trips and no doubt .shared a great
many memories. After 25 years
they are coming back.
•
- Who were these heros? Has time
faded their names? Well, here is a
list of our heros to refresh your
memory:
Dennis Morrissey, Bob Hoffman,
Bill Chipchase, Earl Wagner, Mike
Cushman, Bill Shaddick, Craig
-Chapman, Dale Turvcy, Steve

Cooper.

-The 1963-64 Hensall-Zurich
Combites are assembling once
again. Oh Saturday, February 25. at
8 p.m. in the Hensall arena the
Combines suit up to take on the
.C.O.H.A. Hensall• Driftwoods. A
cash donation -at the door gets you
to see yesterday's heros. At 5:30-
7:30 a reception for players, fami-

The opening face off will take
place at 8 p.m. The old arena is'
long gone and the din and the roar
of the Combine fans that used to
shake the rafters has long ceased but
our memories will be forever. I was

TOWNSHIP 3
After eight minutes of scoreless
play, Jeff Inch got Exeter on the
board after taking a pass from
Bryce Hann.
Stephen got on the board early in
the second when Andy Glavin
scored from Pres Lavier, but Exeter
got that -back 30 seconds later
when Kline scored from Bryce
Hann. -
Just 22 seconds into the third pe-
riod, Bryce Hann scored on a solo
effort, but Stephen abounded on a
goal by Lavicr:.
Exeter then buckled down to play
good positk nal hockey and scored
two quick goals, Bryce Hann from
Inch and Kline from Bryce Hann.
Stephen's final goal came off the
stick of Andy Glavin, only to be
nullified by an unassisted goal by
Geoff Hann. The Crunchers defence of Gavin -
Poole, Nathan Hern and Trevor
Obre made an.outstanding effort to
poke check and stifle any Stephen
scoring chances.
