One came while Harriston was shorthanded and the rest were while. Harriston was enjoying •a . man ad- vantage. Mohawk defenceman Barry. Bayn- ham said the team is finally play- ing hockey the way it is capable of. "We are playing steady .hockey right now and we are playing better defensively. We had a talk as a team after the season was over about what we had to do in the playoffs and it has seemed to work well so far," saidBaynham. He said the team would_ like to cut down on the penalties hut Said. that would be hard to do because to dowel! the Mohawks have to play aggresivcly and when you play ag7. gresive hockey you are bound to take penalties. Baynham said 'the Mohawks , came out flying Saturday night and. coasted from there. The Mohawks had a 2-0 lead b-- fore thc game was two minutes . old. • - Jeff McClenaghan opened the scoring from Gord Brooks and Kris Bedard just 27 seconds into- the contest and less .than twominutes later Dave ,-Randerson scored his first of two from Quincy Wilker. The Mohawks didn't score again -for 10 minutes when Jeff Shipley - popped in a goal- from McClena- ghan and Joe Scherer. - Harriston managed their first first goal at 14'16 of the first by,Jeff. Benderwhile shorthanded. Exeter proceeded to scored the next five goals and built a com- manding 8-1. lead. Scoring were; Wilker from Jeff Warren and Mark Sochner, Randerson from Ted Kew - ley and Paul Barton, Wilker from Randerson and Soehner, Brooks from Bedard and Bill Glover and Wilker got his hat trick with an unassisted goal.. Bender got ..his' second for. the Blues, with just over five minutes left to play, while on the power PIaY•. . Joe Scherer from Al Gates and Ron Goodhand and Barton from -Wilker and McClcnaghan rounded out the Exeter scoring plays. Mohawk goaltender Rick Pikul. was not very busy but stopped 14 of the 16 shots sent hisway in the contest. . - EXETER 8 HARRISTON 5 Sunday afternoon's contest was a penalty -filled affair. The Mohawks Late goal lifts Wellesley past Hawks EXETER - A goal by Chris Rad- ley, of Wellesley, with 11:09 gone in the third period, broke a 3-3 tic and enabled the Applejacks to defeat the Exeter Hawks 5-3 at the South" Huron Rec Centre Sunday night.' - Friday night. the Hawks rallied from a 5-0 deficit to tie the Mitch- ell Hawks 6-6 at the SHRC. Wellesley got on the board first Sunday night, at 6:56 of the first - period, but Exeter got that back. when Jean Paul Cousincau scored his first of two, from Bryan Quinn and Derck Shackleton at 15:55 of the first period. - The Applejacks took a 3-1 lead on a pair of quick goals early in the second but the Hawks answered back when recently -acquired John Bell scored from Jim Dickins ,at • 6:28 of thc second and Cousincau netted his sccond at 15:45 of the second, from Doug Clark and Shackleton to notch the game at 3- 3 heading into the final period. Both teams had many good chance to get the winner before Radley finally did after taking an er- rant Hawk clearing pass at the Exet- er blucline and beat goalie Bill Pau- li with a slapshot. The Applejacks picked up an empty net goal with 10 seconds left after the.Hawks pulled Pauli in fa- vor of an extra attacker to try and get theequalizer. . EXETER 6 MITCHELL 6 The hometown . Hawks . found themselves behind 4-0 after the opening period and 5-0 early in.thc second before rallying for a pair of goals later_ in the second. " Joel. Campbell started the scoring. for the locals with an unassisted tal- ly at 2:58 of the second and Bell got another back at 7:48 from Dan Nairn. After Mitchell took a 6-2 with a goal later in the second, the Hawks comeback started at 1:14 of the • third when Dickins scored from Jeff Anscms and Larry Lewis. At 13:46. Steve Dubarry scored from Larry 'Lewis and David Dalrymple, then at 16:12 Jim Lewis scored from Du harry and Dalrymple and Cousineau got the tying goal at 18:29, from Mark Morrissey and Nairn, after go- ing tothedressing room just min- utes before to get a new stick The last four Hawks goals came while on the power play. After Friday's game Hawk coach Jack Naim said he was pleased with the way his players never quit. "We- played really- well in the third period, but its too bad we had to play so bad in the first or we could have easily won the game," said Naim. The Hawks completed their sea- son -long domination over -Mitchell with the tic. In six games, -Exeter didn't lose to Mitchell all season long, winning fou4 and tying a pair.. } Marty Merner; of Zurich, was signed before Friday's game and he was between the pipes against Mitchell. This gives the -Hawks three goaltenders for the playoffs. Regular goalie Todd Campbell missed both games,. serving a two - game suspensionfor being third man in a fight in. Tavistock, last Saturday night. The Hawks will close out their regular season Friday night in Ta- vistock against a-vistock.against the Braves at 8:30. Lewis; looking for manager to turn pro By Wayne Proctor EXETER - Docs anybody out there want to be a millionaire? Lennox. Lewis, the Olympic hea- vyweight boxing gold medalist, is looking for a manager so he can turn pro and his manager will be an instant millionaire. - Lewis, 23, from Kitchener, was on hand to speak at the 16th annu- al Exeter Sportsman Dinner at the Exeter Curling Club last Tuesday night, along with fellow gold med- alist Michelle Cameron and others in the world of sports. • Lewis was the only Canadian male to win a gold medal for Cana- da after Ben Johnson had his Stripped after being caught using steroids. - Lcwis said - that incident caused extremely hard times for the, athletes in the Canadian village, but he refused to let anything dis- tract him from his ultimate goal of gold. "I realized I was there for a goal and 1 am not going to let any out- side interference bother me. I didn't phone my mother, I didn't phone anybody, because' I felt that would . hinder me and I just wanted to stay totally focussed and I did a lot of concentrating," said the two-time Olympian. Lewis was born in London Eng- land and came to Kitchener with his mother when he was 12 years. old. He said he learned how to fight at that time because people made fun of his cockney accent. During the Olympics Lewis said he wanted to win the gold for his mother because of all the sacrifices she made for him to become a bet- ter boxer. Randerson led the way offensivilly in the game with four goals. Barton picked up one goal and two assists, Joe Scherer got a goal and an assist, Bill Glover and Ron Goodhand picked up single goals. Ron Elliot set up four goals, Wilker and Bayn- ham each set up a pair and single assists went to Warren,.Soehnerand Bedard_ Bill Dark stopped 31 shots that were sent his way by Harriston shooters, while Steve Lantz stopped 21 Exetcr shots. Game three of the series will be played Friday night at the South Huron Rec Centre at 8:30 and game four- will go Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m: in Harriston. Jamie Pearce opened the scoring for the Irish at 11:04 of the first, after being set up by Scott Demo- ny and Joe Febrcy. . . Shortly after the Braves got on the board, Kevin Leitch put the. home team back out in front with a goal from Brian Schuyler and Bill Patich. Lucan went up 3.1 when Jeff Hirtzell scored from Schuyler and Darren Neil at 3:22 of the sccond and upped it to 4-1 on Demony's goal from Brad Muir four minutes later. " Tavistock got one back at the eight -minute mark and made it a .one -goal game with a goal with six seconds left in the second peri- od Pearce got his second goal, while on the power -play, at 5:32 of the Panthers volleyball team hosts regular -season tournament EXETER - Last Tuesday, South Huron District High School's girls' volleyball teams hosted a regular season league tournament. Attend- ing the tournament were: Listowel, Clinton, Norwell and South Hu- ron. The Senior Panthers came away with four wins and two -loss- es. SH's first opponent was Listow- a-loss in the first game, t e Panthers came back to defeat Listowel in the second game. After a slow start in their next match, the Panthers claimed two victories over Clinton. The girls final competitor was Norwell. In the first game, SH had some problems defensively and were defeated by Norwell. The girls did manage to take the second win to make their final standings of the day 4-2. - On Friday, the Panthers travelled to Clinton for another Huron -Penh ent. The pirl, ming home with four victories. The Panthers met St. Michael of Stratford and took both games. The girls also defeated Mitchell two games straight to end the day with .a 4-0 record. The team's record is now 10-6. The second, third, fourth and fifth positions in the Huron -Perth league arc Very close. SH is look- ing forward to some exciting league play to end the season and they hope to be one of the two teams to advance to the. Western Ontario tournament. The final regular season H -P tour- nament is Tuesday, February 21 at Northwestern Secondary School. Centenaires on Sea - forth Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m, • Hockey PantPers fall to Clinton Redmen By Michelle Ellison CLINTON - On Friday, the South Huron District High School Hockey Panthers travelled to Clin- ton for a league game. The short- handed Panthers put forth a good effort but fell 2-0 to the Redmen. It wasn't until the 9:26 mark of the second period that Clinton hit the net on a goal by Jeff Jewitt. SH couldn't put one past the Red men's goal tender and resorted to pulling Doug KcIIs from between the pipes. With only. 3.48 seconds remaining • in the game, Clinton scored an empty -ret goal to take. the 2-0 victory. - Coach Paul Cronin was pleased withhis team's play while short staffed.
