Winter wear? - An appreciative audience packed the Grand Bend Legion Friday evening for the Win-
ter Carnival fashion show. Carnival Queen contestant and. eventual winner, Kathy Merner, gave the
audience a glimpse of cruisewear for the 1989 season.

GRAND BEND - "... And the
new Grand Bend Carnival'Quden is
Miss Colonial Gables, Kathy
Memel'!"
That was the announcement ner-
vously awaited by five lovely
young ladies last Saturday at thc
Carnival Quccn Dance in thc Le-
gion hall.
Miss Sandcastle Days 1988, Car-
oline Scruton, was First Runner -
to new ueen urst into happy
tears as she was crowned by Kerrin
Mchagcn, last year's queen.
Kathy presented a lovely valen-

white fur trimmed robe was draped
over her red satin and lace gown
and she carried a bouquet of r'4 rov-
es.
The Forest City Jazz Band played
a waltz, as Carnival Chairman Dave
Sheppard got the first dance with
the new Quccn.
Eighteen -year-old Kathy Memel-
is
crncris a Grade 13 student, daughter of
Bob and Elizabeth Mcmcr of Zu-
rich. She is an accomplished fig-
ure skater, having competed in
Australia and New Zealand, and
also works part-time at the Coloni-
al hotel.
Next Saturday shc'll.be Queen of
the Winter Parade and get to award
the trophies to the winning Sno-
Pitch teams and SnowBird Golfers.
She also wins a trip for two to
Montreal with $500 spending
money.
And the winner is - Miss Colonial/Gables, Kathy Merner, 18, of
Zurich, was crowned 1989 Miss Winter Carnival at the Grand
Bend Legion as part of the Winter Carnival ceremonies. She was
one of 10 contestants vying for top honors. Caroline Scruton,
Miss Sandcastle, was' the first runner-up.
Puzzlemanla - The Grand Bend Legion was the site of the. first-ever Puzzlerrania as part of the
Grand Bend Winter Carnival. The entrants were broken down into two categories, 13 and over, who
tried to solve puzzles with 300 pieces and the 12 -and -under group tried to solve puzzles with 100
pieces. Thewinner in the younger category, Jeremy Anderson, 12, of Lambeth, solved his in only 13
minutes, while the adults were supposed to finish by 4 p.m. after starting three hours earlier. Trying
their luck here is Jason Woodley, left, 12 and Jennifer Woodley, 10, of Grand Bend.

Sno-pitch
Sno-pitch - Trying to stay warm was the order of the day when
the teams for the Sloo-Pitch Tournament in Grand Bend took to
the',freld. Pictured he is a game between the Colonial Hotel and
Fini egan's Fantastics. The championship game in the tournament
will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in Grand Bend.
There's the pitch • Bill Glover, better known for his work on the ice with the Exeter Mohawks, tries
his luck as pitcher far the Colonial Hotel in the Sno-Pitch Tournament in the Grand Bend Winter Car-
nival. In all 12 teams were trying for the title. but on Saturday most teams were just trying to keep
warm.
