Sunday night with a 8-3 loss to the Harriston Blues at the South Huron Rec Centre. . Despite the loss, the Mohawks close out the year in first place with a 17 -5 -record, good for 37 points, 11 more than the Blues and tho. Elo- ra Rocks, but the Rocks were awarded second place because of a better goals for than against percent- age when it came down to the tie= breaking system at a playoff meet- ing in Harriston Monday night. -Even though Sunday's game meant nothing t the Mohawks in the standings and meant a lot to the Blues, Mohawk coach and general manager Bob Rowe is starting to get worried with the playoffs just around the corner because of the way the team has performed since being eliminated two games to -one to the Durham Huskies in the first round of the Hardy Cup. "This hockey club has all the ability it could ever want. The one thing we are lacking is heart. Lately we have been very suspect in things . like, defence, power -play and goal- tending but if the boys don't start This Space Available putting some heart into the games they can get the golf clubs out early this year," said Rowe. "To succeed at anything you have to put your heart into it and lately the boys haven't been doing that. I just couldn't believe the way these guys accept the loss, like it means nothing to them," he added. Rowe said some players, Jeff McClenaghan and Barry Baynham to mention two, played outstanding games, but for the most part the ef- fort was just not there. The Mohawks actually got on the board first when Dave Randerson scored at 2:57 of the opening peri- od, from Quincy Wilkcr and Paul Barton. The Bluesanswered to tie the game at 9:31 bf.the first, with Dave Craig scoring. Harriston sent the Mohawks sing- ing the Blues with five unanswered goals in the second period to take control of the game and a 6-1 lead into the final frame. Randerson got one back for the Mohawks at 3:34 of the period, from Ted-Kewley and Jeff Warren, while on the power play, but Har- riston got.two more goals before Exeter's Jeff McClenaghan made a solo end-to-end dash to score a shorthanded to make the score a little more respectable. Gord Brooks picked up the only assist. Steve Lantz turned aside 25 shots in the Harriston net while Bill Dark stopped 14 shots sent his way by the Blues. The Mohawks will open the best - of -seven first round of the playoffs Saturday night at 8:30 p,m. against the Blues, who lost second place in a tie -breaking formula with the Elo- ra Rocks, who each finished the sea- son with 26 points. The Rocks and Tavistock Royals will play in the other South Division semi-final. The second game of the series will go Sunday at 2 p.m. in Hams- ton, game three Friday, February 17 at 8:30 at the SHRC, and four Sun- day, February 19 at 2 p.m. in Har- riston. Braves, drop., EXETER = The Exeter Hawks' split their home -and -home, weekend series with the Tavistock Braves, winning 7-5 Friday night at the South Huron Rec Centre and losing 4-3 in Tavistock Saturday night. The first two periods were score- less and Jason Grenicr got the only goal of the game, unassisted, at 4:29 of the third period to give the local squad the win. Panthers win consolation championship by Michelle Ellison EXETER - On "the weekend, South Huron District High School Senior boys' basketball team be- came the consolation champions at an invitational tournament held at North Middlesex District High School in Parkhill. In the first round, the Panthers met a strong Saunders team and were defeated 63-46. Saunders con- trolled most of the play in the first half to take a slight 29-22 Lead. Al- though the Panthers worked hard to catch their opponents, they still. came up short, losing 63-46. Rob Pearen led the Panthers with 22 points followed by Tim McAi- lister with 11 and Rob Wonnacott with _six. 'Nat -Me t till ill', t rill i`r lit of London. SH was successful wift- ning 60-53. It was a tight match for SH as. they only lead 23-22 going into the sccondhalf. Fortunately, the Panthers retained their slight lead to take the 60-53 victory. Prawn !h0 points. Scott Hcrn followed with 11 and Wonnacott and McAllister each added eight and seven `respec- tively. This advanced the Panthers to the consolation final game against Woodstock. SH played extremely well controlling most of the play. The Panthers took an early 41-23 lead over their opponents in the first half and continued to outplay Woodstock to take the 74-49 victo- ry and the consolation champion- ship. Pearcn played a spectacular game leading with 28 points. South Huron Big Brothers presi- dent Jim Chapman said he hopes to raise at (cast $10,000, which is about equivalent to what was raised last year. Chapman said, in previ- ous years the have raised close to $8,000 but like to keep improving each year because the cost of every • thing else keeps going up. . • The money raised will pay for Big Brother programs, administra- tion, staff development and will go into their budget' for the year, but also a large part will go towards ad- vertising to make people aware of the great need for big brothers and big sisters in this arca although it isa provincial -wide event. As well, at the Zurich Town and Country Lancs on February 19 a celebrity and corporate challenge will take part with local businesses and politicians also raising money for the organization.
