Barb Turnbull Greeting Card World
Valentine's Day becoming increasingly popular
By. . Yvonne Reynolds
Valentine's Day, once .reserved
for lovers only, is now.for every-
one. February 14 is the one day of
the. year when -we can make a spe-
cial 'point of telling our children,
our parents, our grandparents and
other special people in our lives
• how much they mean to us. -. .•
Elizabeth Barrett Browning; one-
half of a famous romantic duo,
once asked "How do I love thee?
Let me count the ways" and went
on to do so in ."Sonnets From the
Portuguese":
A century later, three main ave-
nues have emerged as the most
popular. We can send our message
with flowers and candy and cards.

""Flowers are a universal way to
say 'I love you', and more people
are saying tbat every year", noted
Joanne Dinney, proprietor of
Country Flowers. "Valentine's
Day is absolute madness. It's the
busiest day of the year', she added.
Dinncy has found that the vol-
ume of sales on February 14 has
increased each year, and is now
neck and ncck with the front run-
ner, Mother's Day. -
Christmas and Easter are busy
too, but on those -occasions the
rush is spread over a period of
time. Christmas plants are ordered
throughout the month of Decem-
ber, and Easter flowers start going'
out to recipients at Palm Sunday.
Red roses arc still the first choice
for a floral Valentine, either alone
or added to a medley of spring
flowers.
Some wives receive- the same
kind of flowers as they carried in
their bridal bouquet.
Flowers for the occasionare or-
dered well in advance. The Coun-
try Flowers' cooleris filling up
now with -a glorious array of free-
sias, -gladioli, heather, -iris, orchids,
and the tulips, daffodils, and pussy
willows that remind us spring is
not too far away.
Catering to customers on Valen-
tine's Day is an enjoyable time for

Every year Turnbull and her staff

marry their sweethearts, they con-
tinue to remember special occa-
sions.
"There area lot of thoughtful
