K -W Winter Carnival set for weekend
with 10 competing. for Queen honours

weekend
The 20th edition of the popular
event kicks off at 12 noon on Sat-
urday, February 11 with a number
of novelty races mainly for young-
sters up to the age of 16 years.
Saturday evening at 8.15 p.m.,
10 young ladies mostly from the
Kirkton and Woodham areas will
vie for the title of Miss K -W Win-
ter Carnival 1989.
The new Queen will be crowned
by last year's winner Carolyn
Dykeman. The Queen competition
will be followed by a dance in the
K -W Community Cenrtre.
A combined church service with
the congregations of the Kirkton
and Woodham Anglican and United
Churches will begin Sunday's activ-
ities at 9.45. a.m.
Shortly after the church service, a
delicious pancake and sausage din-
ner will be available until 2 p.m.
Sunday afternoon activities will
include a car -poker rally, a snow-
mobile -poker rally, a cross-country
skiing poker.rally and horse drawn
sleigh rides.
The Kirkton-Woodham Winter
Carnival committee was established
in 1970 and since that time has
been providing funds for youth bet-
terment in the community.
Financial assistance over the years
has been provided for capital expen-
ditures on community projects and
for the group committees involved
with Girl Guide and Boy Scout ac-
tivities.
The main executive in addition to
president Dennis Richardson in-
cludes past president Brian.Harde-
man, vice-president Tim Shute, sec-
retary Gord Robinson, treasurer
George Levy and assistant treasurer
Bob Spence.
Heading the various carnival com-
mittees are Bob Cowdrey, John
Ulch, Clair. Brant, Larry Rundle,
Murray Atthill, Jack Rundle, Rick
Bradford and Brian Hardeman.

OPP investigate four accidents
EXETER - Four motor vehicle
accidents were among the 38 gener-
al occurrences investigated this
week by officers of the Exeter de-
tachment of the Ontario Provincial
Police.
On Monday, January 30, vehi-
cles operated by Gary Cooper, To-
ronto and Jakub Szyndler, St.
Thomas collided at the intersection
of Nelson and King streeets in
Hensall. Both drivers were taken to
South Huron Hospital in Exeter by
Zurich Ambulance for treatment.
Vehicles driven by Donald Sim-
ard and Robert,J-Iendrick, both of

Hendrick and a passenger Ivan
Mellinger, also of Zurich suffered
minor injuries and were treated at
South Huron Hospital.
The same day, a vehicle driven
by Cheryl Dunnell, RR 2 Dash-
wood collided with a dog on Huron
road 4 in Stephen township. The
animal was killed.
A vehicle operated by Hilda
White, Grand Bend slid off High-
way 83, west of Exeter at 8.40
p.m., Saturday evening and struck a
fence. No injuries were sustained
and damage was light.

Charges laid during the week in-
cluded 52 under the Highway Traffic
Act, seven for Liquor Licence Act
infractions, one impaired driver,
four under the Criminal Code and
two drivers received suspensions of
12 hours each. -
Officers remind drivers to buckle
up and drive carefully during winter
weather conditions and arrive safely
at your destination.
