By. Yvonne Reynolds
• Surefire crowd pteasers. Audi-
encc participation. A. popular and
well-known actress. Roles for area
youngsters.
This recipe for a Successful suis -
mer season is now simmering on
the back burner at Huron Country
Playhouse; being expertly stirred
and mixed by chef Tony .Lloyd. •
The recently appointed, artistic di-
•• rector is cooking up an appetizing
and irresistible 1989 playbill de-
signed to appeal to the tastes of all
theatre -goers. -
- The menu offers mystery, drama,-
farceand music from such proven
-- winners as Agatha Christie, Ray
.Cooney, Neil Simon and Rogers
and Hammerstein. .
Each entree boasts a special in-
-".gr diem: •
The opening presentation is
Dame Agatha's- thriller "Witness "
• for the Prosecution":. During the
June 27 to July 15 run, members
• of the audience will get a chance to
be part oldie. action.- For each per-
formance, 11 people will be cho-
sen to join the foreman in the jury
box.. They will- be on stagc"for the
second act; see part of the third
from the wings, and then be re-
volved back onto the stage for the
denouement
Although the verdict has already
- been `reached, Lloyd promises that
both the defense and the prosecu"-.
tion will "conic over and drone at
the jury„ -
Lloyd has -pulled off a real coup
for the .comedy "Run For Your
Wife". Shelley Peterson has agreed
to play one of the wives. The ef-
fervescent blonde last appeared at
the. Playhouse in 1984 -in another -
Cooncy play "Bedroom Farce'. -
Yoti can see the premier's wife in
person from July 18 to 29. -
• Ron Ulrich, Playhouse artistic di-
rector in 1983, '84 and '85, will he
back to direct "Last of the Red Hot
Lovers", Simon's .Charming fable
about a middle-aged man's disas
trous attempts at a final fling. The
unbeatable combination of a talent-
ed director and one of Simon's best
plays will he available from August
1 to 12..-. • -
. The season's grandc finale -"The
King and I" will feature about 30
youngsters.. from this area as the
progeny of the prolific:ruler of
Siam. Most -of the children will
need some singing and dancing
skills. However, Lloyd will also
be seeking atleast one set of twins
who need only' look inscrutably -
Oriental and bow. in unison. • • -
"I get my batteries charged work-
ing with kids. The flow of energy
from them is tremendous," Lloyd.
commented in a recent interview.
Lloyd, a native of. Wales,. has-
been part of the Canadian theatre
scene since his arrival in this coun-
try in 1954. He is no stranger to
the Playhouse; tie acted in "Sleuth"
in 1984, and directed "Key :For
Two" Last year. - . -
Lloyd comes to Grand Bend with
a proven track -record, established
over the last 16 years as founder and
guiding force of the Sudbury Thea-
tre Centre. He had planned to free-
lance until presented with the chal-
lenge and opportunity of Coming to
The playbill Lloyd has put to-
gether for the 1989 season is -a re-
flection of his first love - comedy.
"I wouldn't direct Chechov. 1
couldn't do it justice", he confided.
Lloyd is honest enough to admit
he has made some mistakes.
"Jitters", which he thought suitable
for last year's summer stock,
bombed in Sudbury. Lloyd
blames the comedy's raunchy dia-
logtie. -

One night while playing one of
the two characters in "Sleuth", the
other lead suddenly announced he
didn't feel well, and disappeared into
'the wings. .
The stage manager was hurriedly
prested into service.' A copy -of the .
script was thrust into his unwilling
hands, and he read his lines, while •
Lloyd supplied the moxprnents by
pushing and pulling his reluctant
partner around in -a macabre, im-
promptu dance. The final curtain
brought the performance to a merci-
ful end.
While starring in that same play,
Lloyd was joined one evening by a
spaced -out yomg woman Who -asked
for a close look at "the jewels you
stole". Shewas escorted off the
stage, and the play continued with- •
out the benefit of uncalled-for ex-
tras.
Lloyd plans to stick to directing
during his first year at Grand Bend.
He has made a two-year commit-
ment, and will be selling the fami-
ly's 13 -room house in Sudbury to
move to- Lake Huron's shore in
May.
Lloyd has some ideas for the fu-
ture of the Playhouse. One he
tossed out was perhaps having Play-
house 11 entirely devoted to Cana
an works: .
Lloyd's appointment has already
resulted in a turn -around at the Hu-
ron Country, Playhouse. Advance
subscriptions are coming in steadi-
ly; and the number of group book
ings surpasses last. year's, in spite
of the -fact this year's notices were --
sent out two weeks later than usual.
Orders started coming in two days
after the mail -out. One matinee for
"The King and I". is sold out, and
another is almost gone.
Ticket prices are the same as . in
1988. This, too, fits in , with
Lloyd's philosophy: -"An artistic.di-
rector's job "is to make a theatre
work, and become a viable institu-
tion. 'We shouldn't lose -money, but
we shouldn't make a huge profit."
• All omens point to a good 1989
summer season at the. Huron Coun-
try Playhouse.
