EXETER - Any hopes of the Ex-
eter Mohawks repeating as Ontario •
- Hardy Cup champions were dashed
Saturday night when they lost 7-3
•to the Durham Huskies in the
opening round of the 1989 Hardy
Cup Playdowns. The Huskies won
• the series 2-1. .
• Last year the Mohawks advanced
to the Eastern Canada champion-
- ships but were eliminated in four
- straight games.
The team had hopes of going
even further this -year . but after los-
ing the best -of -three series to Dur-
ham 2-1, those hopes were put on
hold for another year.
The series opened January 14,
with an 8-4 win for the Huskies at
the South Huron Rec Centre. The
Mohawks forced a third and decid-
ing.gamc by doubling Durham 4-2
Thursday night in Durham, before -
being eliminated Saturday.
• The Mohawks had several good
chances to win Saturday night's
game in the first period, but most
of their shots were either wide of
the net or stopped by Durham goa-
lie Ron Webster. The Mohawks
outshot Durham 17-8,.in the open-
ing period, but trailed 1-0.
The roof fell in on the Mohawks
in the second period, with Durham •
scoring four more times and the
Mohawks were never able to recov-
er.
General manager Bob Rowe, -
who handled the coaching chores
with Gord Brooks dressed for the
game,.felt the inability of the Mo-
hawks to score in the first period
was the key to the game. -
"We"should have won that game -
in the first period but we couldn't
hit the net when we had our big
chances. We should have had
enough goals in the first -period to
coast from -there, but it didn't work
out that way.
I think the hockey club we have
right now should have been able to
beat the *hockey club they have,"
said Rowc.
Rowe said he doesn't think it
will be hard to get the players mo-
tivated to do well in the league
playoffs. •
"The players on the club this
year that played last year don't real-
ty feel they won anything last year
and I think -they will be hungry to
go,far in the playoff's. We must go
back to the basics of hockey, espe-
cially getting ourselves mentally
prepared.
We have -to -put the Hardy Cup
behind us until next year and"go of
ter our new goal, winning thc pro-
vincial playo-lf championship;"
said Rowe. - :
•"Thc Mohawks outplayed- the
anskies in the first period but had
nothing to show for their" efforts
and in fact were behind 1-0 at inter-
mission,
thanks to a Bob Sullivan
goal, from Ken Nelson._ - •
The Huskies came out flying in '-
the sccond period and controlled
play for most of that period. Nelson
scored 17 seconds into the period.
Dave Hopkins scored : at 1:22 to
make it 3-0. The lead was upped to
4-0 when Kevin Hopkins connected
at 9:17 and George Campbell made.
it 5-0 at 13:06. --
