Mohawks lose cup opener
EXETER - The Exeter Mohawks
played one of their worst games of
the year Saturday night at the Rec
Centre. Unfortunately it was in one
of their most important games so
far.
It was the opening game in the
best -of -three Hardy Cup Playdowns
against the Durham Huskies, who
won the contest 8-4.
If the Mohawks lose the second
game of the series Thursday night
m Durham, they will not be play-
ing hockey in May this year, like
they did last year.
"We didn't come to play tonight
and that is all there is to it. Our
most _important game of the year
and we didn't come to play," said a
bewildered Mohawk coach Gord
Brooks after the game.
"We came out flat from the start
and let them free -wheel in our
building and it is going to get a tot
tougher we we go back up there to
their building. We looked like the
visiting team out there on the ice
tonight.
"If we don't go up to Durham and
play the body and get physical with
them we might as well mail the
two points and not even show up.
They are a free -wheeling club and
for us to stay with them we have
to play the body, which is what we
intended to do tonight, but never
got the chance." said Brooks.
The Huskies held the Mohawks
to just 17 shots on goal in the
game and Brooks said any team
that holds the Mohawks to 17
shots deserves to win. The Huskies
fired 23 shots at Rick Pikul in the
Exeter net.
The Mohawks got behind the
eight ball right from the start.
Brad Law opened the scoring for
Durham 33 seconds into the con-
test and they pumped home another
at 4:23 while on the power -play.
The Mohawks started clawing
back at 9:57 of the first when Jeff
Shipley got the locals on the board
from John Kemick and Joe Scher-
er.
Exeter's Kris Bedard got them
back on even terms at 18:50 with a
goal from Mark Soehner and
Wayne Urbshott.
The Mohawks took a 3-2 lead at
1:06 of the second, when Scherer
scored from Shipley and Kemick.
The Huskies got that back less
than a minute later.
Randy Kraut, last year's Mohawk
captain who recently signed to play
with his- old mates this year, put
the Mohawks back out in front at
3:03, from Quincy Wilker and Paul
Barton.
But from then on it was all Dur-
ham. They tied the game at 5:41 of
the second and took the lead for
good less than a minute later. Dur-
ham added goals at 14:17 of the sec-
ond, 3:45 and 11:50 of the third.
The second game in the best -of -
three series will be played Thursday
night in Durham and if the Mo-
hawks win that game, the deciding
game will go Saturday night at the
Rec Centre at 9 D.M.
Hawks continue domination over Mitchell
EXETER - The Exeter Hawks'
domination over the Mitchell
Hawks continued'on Friday night
at the Rec Centre, when the local
Hawks came through with a 5-3
win over the visiting Hawks.
Exeter has played Mitchell five
times this year and have beaten
their namesakes four times and one
game ended in a draw.
The Hawks looked like they were
going to blow the Wellesley Ap-
plejacks away in their game last
Tuesday night at the South Huron
Rec Centre, but Wellesley decided
to make a game of it but fell two
goals short 7-5. .
The Hawks had the majority of
the play in the first period, despite
losing starting goalie, Todd Camp-
bell,
ampbell, after taking a shot off the
mask, left with a cut on the fore-
head and a bump on the head, just
five minutes into the contest. Brent
McDonald, just called up from the
Kinsmen General Midgets, com-
pleted the game between the pipes
replacing Campbell.
Jim Lewis scored the only two
goals of the first period, one from
Steve Dubarry and Frank Wulterk-
ens and one from Joel Campbell
and Jeff Ansems.
Doug Clark gave the locals a 3-0
lead with a goal from Jim Lewis
and Dubarry at 3:18 of the second.
But then the Applejacks came to
life.
Wellesley got on the board at
5:44 of the second. It was a goal
that McDonald had no chance to
stop.
The Applejacks then started to
carry more of the play to the
Hawks, but Exeter got a break at
7:32 when Derek Shackleton
slipped one past Wellesley goalie
Jeff Gerber, from Jim Dickins and
Jean Paul Cousineau, to make it a
4-1 game.
But Wellesley scored the next
two goals to come back to within a
goal, with half the game yet to be
played.
The Hawks rebounded to score
the next two goals to take a 6-3
lead into the second intermission,
by Dubarry from Jim Lewis at
12:15 and Ansems from Dubarry
with less than a minute to play in
the second. The Hawks were out -
shot 13-6 in the second, but made
good use of their shots, scoring
four times. .
The Hawks took a 7-3 on Dan
Naim's goal from Mark Morrissey
and Ansems at 13:30 of the third.
The Applejacks scored two more
goals later in the period but the
Hawks hung on for the win.
Friday night, Exeter got a two -
goal performance from Jim Dick-
ins, while Jeff Ansems, Doug
Clarke and Jim Lewis scored one
goal each.
Larry Lewis picked up a pair of
assists, and singles went to Jean
Paul Cousineau, Jim Lewis, An-
sems and Steve Dubarry.
Mitchell's goals came once in
each of the periods.
With the pair of wins, the Hawks
now have 30 points, good for
fourth place in the league, but only
two points behind second -place
Brussels Bulls.
Next game for the Hawks is Fi:-
day night when the Seaforth Cente-
naires are at the SHRC for an 8:30
contest. Saturday the Hawks travel
to Wellesley for another 8:30 p.m.
game against the Applejacks. Sun-
day afternoon the Hawks are in
Brussels for a 2 p.m. matinee.
Lined up - Jim Lewis, left, of the Exeter Hawks, gets Jim Hehn, of the Wellesley Applejacks lined up
for a heavy hit, when those teams met in Junior A action at the South Huron Rec Centre last Tues-
day. The Hawks won the contest 7-5.

ST. THOMAS - This weekend
South Huron District Iligh

team travelled to St. Thomas for
the annual Titan Tournament held
at Central Elgin Secondary School.
Although the girls played inconsis-
tently all day, they still managed to
bring home the consolation win.
The Panthers first opponent in
round-robin play was St. Joseph's
High school of St. Thomas. This
match brought SH their first win of
the. tournament, defeating St. Jo-
seph's 15-8.

easy 15-2 victory over College Av-

East Elgin 15-9 to place them third
after regulation play.
In playoff games the Panthers
met Oakridge SS, the second -place

the Panthers 15-11 but SH turned

tors won.
were not disappointed as the annual
get together of the league's best
ended in a 10-10 deadlock.
Some people who attended the
banquet before the game thought it
would be nice if the game ended in
a draw, but nobody expected a 10-
10 tie, as defence was almost non-
existent and everybody got into the
scoring act.
The Exeter Hawks and Lucan
Irish were well represented at the
contest. The North All -Stars wcrc
coached by Hawks' Jack Nairn and
George Pratt was the trainer for the
North squad.
Todd Campbell was the starting
goalie for the North and he was
joined by teammates, Jeff Anscms

All Star coach - Jack Nairn, of the Exeter Hawks, was also the
coach for the North All -Stars in the Western Junior D Hockey
LeSgue All-Star game at the Lucan Arena Saturday night. The
game ended in a 10-10 draw. Nairn congratulates a player after
making a nice play with a pat on the back.
