• y observations for the end of 1988 were rather serious in
n nature, and so I promised that 1989 would begin on a
M' lighter note. Probably one of the things in lift that fasci-
nates me more than much else is the ability of people to
use language. I marvel at those who can call up words and phrases
and send them on missions.
In our life time, Churchill must represent the ideal, the orator at
his best. Those of us with any interst in politics or history have
heard and read his words, and only a "block, a stone, a worse than
senseless thing" could not be moved by his eloquence. In Canada,
the closest we have produced to Churchill are John Diefenbaker.and
Stephen Lewis. Even if we didn't agree with the messages these men
delivered, we cannot help appreciating their style, their command of
words and particularly, in Diefenbaker's case especially, their hu-
mour. The best writer who has mastered both language and humour
is, of course, Allan Fotheringham. He is/was great. But locally, we
have our own treasures. • -
I was always impressed by Andy McLean. His vocabulary was ex-
ceptional. The man had a genius of expression that is rare, indeed.
He could speak to any group (and probably on any subject) inspiring
both reflection and humour. Joe Wooden has a facility with the
Queen's English (and accent) that is second to none. His memory,(if
not his philosophy) always delights me. Joe could have made a for-
tune on the stage, in the Monty Phython vein. Jim Beckett is quick
with the retorts and one-liners - he really is good if your skin is
thick and your sensibilities are not easily affected - Shaw the Sea-
gull! (Jim, you know, can no longer go sunbathing at the beach -
Greenpeace always drags him into the water, trying to save him.)
Another who has successfully risen to great heights by stooping to
great depths for humour is Ken Lawton. The man has mastered the
pun. His knowledge of language is so vast and his mind so quick
that he can instantaneously create a play on words that is invariably
clever and frequently (as a bonus) witty. (He will frequently avoid
taking credit for this low form of homour by blaming his wife as
the originator - now that is low.)
Those of you who know these people appreciate what I am say-
ing, and all of them have been recognized at one time or another for
their gifts. There are others, no doubts, in our midst who deserve at-
tention as well. We should encourage them, and where possible,
capture their words for posterity. I believe we ate living in an age
where these savants are part of a dying breed. In our attempts to "tell
it like it is", we arc losing the ability to express ourselves in such a
manner that we are clearly understood, that we touch responsive
chords in our listeners; that we, in short, inform, convince, enter-
tain, inspire others with the quality of our language. To illustrate by
way of a concrete example, look at the popularity of the current hor-
ror and action movies. An incredible amount of garbage is generat-
ing great profits through violence and absolutely no thought. If I
had the inclination, I know I could easily provide the dialogue for
.any film where Arnold Scbwarzeneggcr meets Rambo.
Next week I want to offer humorous examples of good and bad us-
age of language.
