Hawks rebound to win
B division championship
EXETER - Despite losing to Lu -
can Irish in the opening game of
their 12th annual tournament on
the weekend, the Exeter -Hawks
wereable to bounce back and win
the B Division title.
The.A Division was decided in a
shootout after Caledon and Welles-
ley couldn't decide things in regula-
tion and overtime play. Caledon
ended up winning the title 8-7.
The tournament originally had
five teams from the North Division
of the Western Junior Hockey
League, including Exeter, Lucan,
Seaforth Centenaires, Wellesley.
Apple Jacks and Mitchell Hawks,
and also three teams from the Jun-
ior C ranks, including Caledon
Flyers, -Grand Valley Harvesters
and Port Elgin Bears.
But a monkey wrench- was
thrown into the tournament plans
on Saturday when Port Elgin
pulled out because they couldn't get
enough players to fill the bench.
Hawks president George Pratt de-
cided to forfeit all of the Port Elgin
games and teams playing them
would receive a bye to the next
round.
Lucan and Exeter renewed their
rivalry in Friday's opening game
with Lucan coming out on top 9-
4.
Exeter led 2-1 after 20 minutes,
but Lucan came on to score five in
-the second period and never looked
back.
Paul Barnes led the Irish with a
natural hat trick, (three straight
goals). Also scoring for Lucan
were; Dean Schram, Scott Deno -
my, Brad Muir, David Hinge, Ja-
mie Pearce and Jeft~Hirtzell.
Muir had three assists, while sin-
gle assists were picked up by
Barnes, Glen Marshall, Denomy,
Pearce, Hinge, Joe Febrey, David
Murray, Schram, Hirtzell and Todd
Hayter.
Exeter scored three of their four
goals on the power play but it
wasn't enough to beat the Irish.
Finding the scoresheet for the
Hawks were; Jim Lewis from Jeff
Ansems and Steve Dubarry, Jean-
Paul Cousineau from Brent Nairn
and Jim Lewis, Ansems from Jim
Lewis and Cousineau and Dubarry
from Larry Lewis.
The win put the Irish on the A
side of the tournament and the loss
put the Hawks on the B side.
In other first round games, Well-
esley doubled Seaforth 6-3 and
Mitchell thumped Grand -Valley 10-
4 , while Caledon advanced thanks
to the forfeit win over - -
In the second round, Jtev
surprised Lucan by a 7-4 count,
thanks to a superb game by Apple-
jacks netminder Jeff Gerber.
Glen Marshall led the Irish in this
contest with two goals and two as-
sists, while Mike Hirtzell and Jeff
Hirtzell picked up other Lucan
goals. Jamie Pearce, Brian Schuyler
and Dean Doerr contributed single
assists for the Irish.
