Intriguing - Roland Hewgill (Andrew Borden) and Frances Hyland
(The Actress) in The Grand Theatre's production of Sharon Pol-
lock's Blood Relations. This intriguing examination into the mind
of Lizzie Borden runs until January 28.
Did you do it, Lizzie Borden?
LONDON - Did you do it Lizzie
Borden?
That's the question asked a num-
ber of times during the current
presentation of Blood Relations at
the Grand Theatre in London and
after viewing the show, many of
the spectators were still asking the
same question.
The play written by one of Cana-
da's most respected playwrights
Sharon Pollock centres around the
murders of Andrew and Abby Bord-
en in Fall River, Massachusetts on
August 4 of 11892. The play is set
a number of years after the murders
and the well -crafted mystery pro-
vides plenty of mental exercise in
determining who actually did it.
Youngest daughter Lizzie Borden
was arrested seven days later and
confined to jail until acquitted by a
grand jury on June 20,1983.
The jury could not believe that a
dignified lady from a prominent
and well-to-do family could perpe-
trate such and awful crime.
While the acquittal ended formal
investigations, Lizzie's trial by the
public was never ended.
For many years afterwards, the
general feeling in the small town
was portrayed in the nursery rhyme:
Lizzie Borden took an axe.
Gave her mother forty whacks
When the job was nicely done, -
She gave her father forty-one.
In an attempt to get Lizzie to re-
veal the truth, an actress friend gets
her to playa game by having Lizzie
switch roles with the maid.
The actress -Lizzie parts are played
by Frances Hyland and Diana Le- .
blanc fulfills the roles of Lizzie and
Bridget the maid.
Frances Hyland has received
plaudits for her many appearances
during a 40 year career in England,
New York, Chicago including 12
years at the Stratford Festival.
The play continues at the Grand
Theatre until January 28.

Exeter 'Villa
EXETER - Happy New Yea'
from everyone at the Villa. We
have missed reporting the news be-
cause of the holidays. Hopefully
we are back on schedule and ready
for 1989.
Birthday wishes go to Maggie
Nadiger, our New Year's baby, Do-
rothea Schmetzer, Valeria Arm-
strong, Eileen Carroll, Lloyd
Deichart and Olive Baker. Staff
member Wendy Rhebergen has a
birthday this week and we wish her
a happy day.
We have several thank your from
last year. The Bible Fellowship
Church presented an excellent
show titled "Wise Guys and Starry
Skies". Children and adults both
worked extremely hard and deserve
a great deal of credit.
Some of the nurses from South
Huron Hospital led us in some
Christmas carols. It was nice to
be able to join together for the
songs of the season.
Everyone enjoyed seeing the
lights of Exeter prior to Christ-
mas. Thanks to the Lioness for
making this possible.
The Seniors once again proved
eir faithfulness as they came on
Boxing Day for their -monthly Bin-
go; Thank you from all the resi-
dents for spending part of the holi-
day with us.
Residents brought in the New
Year a little early as we celebrated
on Friday. We said goodbye to the
old year as we enjoyed some wine
and cheese.
Ministers conducting services in
the past weeks have been Rev. Van . '
- Essan, Rev. Hawley and Rev.
Rogers. Thanks to these gentle-
men and their pianists. We do
look forward to our weekly wor-
ship.
The male choir from the Chris-
tian Reformed Church sang on the
weekend. We enjoyed hearing
them and always look forward to
their visits.
Welcome back from hospital,
Emalie Finlay. We are glpd to
have you home again.
Get well wishes to Ron Truemn-
er who is in hospital.
Residents and staff wish to ex-
press our deepest sympathy to Erni
Allison and her family on the pass-
ing of Charlie. He will be -missed
by everyone.
Thought for the week: The trou-
ble with being punctual is that
nine times out of ten there is no-
body there to appreciate it.
Caven women meet
EXETER - The P.C.W. of Caven
Church met on Monday January 9,
1988 at 2 p.m. at the Church with
Mrs. Edna Simmons presiding.
The theme for the meeting was
Finding a task for 1989. The devo-
tional was taken by Mrs. Helen
Bridges with scripture Matthew
Chapter 25 verses 14-30 followed
by a reading on Dr. George W.
Carver a Negro wizard of agriculture
and an Alabama farmer. He began
experimenting with peanuts sweet
potatoes and pecans, from which
over three hundred useful products
were produced. This industry is
worth sixty million dollars per
year.
Mrs. Bridges closed the devotion-
al with prayer. The Roll Call was
for each member to list one of their
talents.
In the business some discussion
was held on the 75th Anniversary
celebration by the Women's Mis-
sionary Society (W.D.) at the Uni-
versity of Western Ontario May 26,
27, 28, 1989. Anyone interested
please contact Mrs. Edna Simmons.
The study was under the leader-
ship of Mrs. Bea Ersman and took
the form of a question period about
the poor of the world and their
problems. Everyone took part in
this study. Mrs. Edna Simmons
gave readings on the New War.
Lunch was served by Mrs. Bridg-
es, Simmons and Ersman.
