The most common New Year's resolution people make is to lose
weight. Most fitness centres see an increase in memberships this
time of year and Total Concept. Fitness Centre in Exeter is no differ-
ent. -
I am hardly the one to give advice on how to keep physically fit,
but I do know a little bit:about working with weights. I have been
',working on and off with them for close to five years now. But, be-
cause losing weight is such a common New Year's resolution, I
thought about going down to Total Concept to talk to a certified in-
structor about thc benefits of lifting weights to help you lose. weight
rather than have me babble on about it.. I thought that would be a
better idea to help you make up your mind if you are a little hesitant
about joining because it might seem too much like work.
Lou Ravclle, a fitness instructor, said they have sold 17 gift certif-
icates as Christmas presents and have had six people join since
Christmas. So this column is alreadytoo late foriliem.
One of the biggest advantages of Total Concept is having it in Ex-
eter. Not many towns the size of Exeter have a fitness centre like
that, and so the first advantage' is you won't have to drive to London
to work out. .
And weight lifting is not preferred by one sex over another. Ra-
velte said it is a very close split between male and female members.
The youngest member is 14 and the oldest is in her mid 60's. (They
don't allow any members under 14 years of age):
When asked about toning tables, Ravelle advises to use them as a
way to get started and then work up to regular exercise.
Total Concept features several thousand pounds of free weights,
six stationary bikes, a Universal machine, sauna, whirlpool, acro-
bics, self-defense training, a tanning bed and massage therapy, which
is done privately from Total Concept but has become very popular.
Ravclle said he tells people who come to look the place over but
are apprehensive. about joining to take the one month membership
just to get started. He always gives first-time lookers a free pass to
use the facilities. Surprisingly many people join right away. Ravclle
said they are fortunate because they have no real competition in town
and you won't have to face any hard sales pitch like you would if
you ventured to London. He said the most popular membership is
the yearly, because it offers savings over the one month, three
month and six month memberships.
When you first come in and want to join Ravclle said he would
ask you what exercise you really hate and strike it off the list of ex-
ercises t do . They offer personal service. Any new person wanting
to be put on a workout program will be and Ravelle and all other in-
structors will work with you as much as you want to help you get'
started.
He said afters you get a workout to your liking you should start
working on the cardiovascular system and endurance, on the bikes,
treadmillland rowing machine. Then you are ready to start working
on your body. Ravclle recommends working on your whole body
right away. After you have been at it for a while you can work on
specific body.pauts each time you come in.
One of the biggest problems people run -into is they expect to sec
results right away and when they don't they get frustrated and quit.
Ravclle said it should take six or seven weeks before you start seeing
any results and to get the maximum benefits you should be working
out three or four times a week and, at all costs, do not quit! I quit for
about six months once and regretted it because it is that much harder
to get back into it
Ravclle said 90-95 percent of the people who join Total Concept
want to lose weight and just lifting weights is only part of what you
have to do to achieve this. You also have to watch what you cat..To-
tal Concept is now able to help you do this.
By filling out a data sheet a new computer system can give you
diet recommendations, with caloric breakdowns, to help you achieve
yourweight-loss goal and it will also give you a work out program.
Tuesday marked thc one-year anniversary for Total Concept and
. Ravclle said they have had a successful first year but they also have
big plans for the future. Plans before Exeter council right now are to
extend their current building to include a racquetball and squash
court, larger weight room and aerobics arca and a non -alcohol
lounge. As soon as council gives its approval,. construction will be-
gin and they hope to have everything completed by spring. Ravclle
is confident that after it is completed that Total Concept will be the
place to hangout in Exeter.

STRATHROY - Exeter Atoni
Bell& dropped a 7-5 decision in the
final game of the John Henry Me-
morial tournament in Strathroy,
Friday morning.
The Bells took five penalties in
the game including a bench minor.
Port Stanley cashed in with fou
power -play goals enroute to their,
victory.
Thebench minor penalty was the
result of objections to an off -side
goal scored by .Port Stanley. "The
linesman was clearly out of posi-
tion and missed the call" said inter-
im coach. Mike Soldan. Trainer Bill
Inson pointed this out to the referee
who had come to the side of the
bench. "The off -side goal cost 'us
two as the referee' assessed a bench
minor to our objections and Pon
Stanley scored on the power play."
With 54 seconds left in the game,
enter pulled goaltender Mau Sims
from the net and the Bells swarmed
the offensive end with several
shots.
