South Huron Rcc Centre didn't
turn out quite the way that most
people had hoped. The Swedes -

quick club and they pass extreme-
ly well' and we thought the only
way we had a chance of winninr;
was to slow them down," said
Schwind[.
Schwindt admitted some of his
players we probably nervous be-
-cause of the large crowd that was
on hand to watch the international
hockey match.
"Some of the guys wcrc' a little
bit tight because of the crowd but
I think the biggest problem was
that most of our guys were awed
by the whole thing," said
Sthwindi-
The nervousness of the local
players was evident from the
opening face off when the Swedes
. took the. play to Exeter and didn't,
let up for two periods. The
Swedes had a 31-6 shots -on -goal,
advantage over two periods and led
on the scoreboard 9-0 heading into,
the third.
Thc two Exctcr goalies, Richards
Phillips and Darren Mason,
couldn't be faulted on most of the
Swedish goals. Many were scored;
off breakaways from skating pas%
the Exctcr defencemen and shots
tipped in from in front of the net.
Schwindt was very impressed
with the way the Swedes played
and said they have one big advan-
tage over the local players.
"They play as a unit all the way
up from the time they start play-
ing hockeyso they all have
known cach other for a long -
time," said Schwindt.
Ryan Lindenfield, who scored,
two goals for Exctcr, -admitted he
was uptight at the start of the
game.
"I was pretty nervous when we
started because we had neve, •
played in front of a big crowd like
that before. We arc dejecicd about
losing but we wcrc glad that we.
carne back in the third.period the
way we did," said Lindcnficld.
Several other players admitted
they wcrc nervous as well.
Lindcnf_icld said he kncw Swe-
den was a fast -skating team be-
cause his team had gone to St.
Marys to watch them play last
Tuesday night but admitted the
quick start by Sweden took thc lo;
cals off their game plan.
Number #6 Rickard Nillson led
Sweden with four goals, Par
Tenggrcn had a pair and 1Mattias
Skoglund,Danial Hedlund, Fredric
Andersson, Manias. Malmstrtim,
Markus Poisson and #24 Rickard
Nilsson had single goals. Believe
it or not, Sweden has two players
named Rickard Nillson.
Three of Sweden's goals came
while shorthanded and two wcrc
while on the power play.
Lindcnficld scorcd a pair for Ex-
eter and David Schwindt netted the
other goal. Jon Ellcrington picked
up an assist on Schwindt's short-
handed tally and Fred Godbolt and
Jason Heywood assisted on both
of Lindenficld's goals.
Thc hockey game was only part
of -their day. The teams spent the
entire day together, starting with
swimming at Oakwood inn in
Grand Bend and then headed for
dinncr at the Exeter Legion, spon-
sor of Sweden's trip to Exctcr:
From there it was on to the hock-
ey game. v...
Kjell-Erik Hencryd, manager of
the Swedish team, said he was
happywith the way things turned
out for his team. •
"We played better tonight than
we did in St. Marys whcn we lost
14-4. We came over from Sweden
on Monday and still had jet lag. I
think the Exctcr boys wcrc very
nervous out there and it showed.
They changed their playing style
in the third period and scorcd some
goals on us, which was good for
their fans," said Hencryd.
He said it was an eight hour
flight from Stockholm to Helsin-
ki to Toronto on Monday.
Hencryd said the Exctcr boys
were very polite to his players and
his team , had a very nice time
swimming and having dinner _,.
The Swcdish tcam was billeted
in St. Marys and came over early
in the day. Swcdcn played in
Alymcr on Saturday and have an-
othcr game with St. Marys tom-
morow night. Hencryd said he
hopes to do better than they did
:atimc against their hosts.
The Swedish players have had
