Now there's some help
for winter garden blues
The University of Guelph
has discovered a cure for
gardening enthusiasts who
suffer from spring fever
during the long winter. The
Qualified Plantsman course
can help you brush up your
gardening skills in the
warmth of your own home.
"This course offers
valuable information for the
hobby gardener. garden
center staff. and commercial
horticulturists," says Wendy
Elrick, of the University's
independent study division.
"It is a good all-round
gardening course that covers
a wide range of horticultural
subjects from the ground
up„
The course, sponsored by
the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food, was
prepared by seven ex-
perienced horticulturists
from the University of
Guelph. By following the
foursections of text
material, three filmstrips,
and taped cassette com-
mentary, students can learn
from the experts, at home.
The landscaping section of
the course covers such topics
as selecting appropriate
plant materials, and
characteristics of various
evergreens, deciduous trees
and shrubs. There is also
information about soil
management, turf grasses
and control measures
needed to develop high
quality lawns.
For the flower enthusiast,
there are sections about
perennial borders , her-
baceous gardens, soil
preparation and planting
procedures, as well as
descriptions of many annual
and perennial flowering
plants.
"This course material isn't
limited to large 6utdoor
gardens," says Miss Elrick.
"There are sections devoted
to balcony, patio and roof
gardens. For indoor gar-
deners, there is a section
about selection and culture
of plants."
Costs of the course. which
includes three filmstrips of
about 60 calor slides, a small
hand vie'ser, and taped
cassette commentary, is $100
for Ontario residents and
$130 for out -of -province
residents. The course
materials are retained by
the student for future
reference
The Qualified Plantsman
course is one of 50 home

Their programs are to assist
the young women in
homemaking and
development of their talents.
Mrs. H. Maluske presented
the resolutions that had been
received from the different
areas. The resolutions that
were sustained pertained to
the legalizing of marijuana,
personal advertising on the
media, farm land use, and
the closing of hospital ac-
commodation.
Mrs. Harvey Noblitt, the
president-elect for the
Federated Women's
Institute of Canada, gave the
national report. Studies are
being made on laws per-
taining to children, the
Citizenship and the British
North America Act, land use
and Canadian Unity. The
voting delegates to the
Golden Jubilee of the
Associated Country women
of the World in Hamburg
Germany in May 1980 were
named.
For an old fashioned
Christmas setting why not
plan to attend "Christmas at
the Lee Day" on December 6
when the Erland Lee
Museum Home at Stoney
Creek will welcome visitors.
The Hon. Pauline McGibbon
will be among the guests on
that day.
The Officers' Conference
at Waterloo University will
be from April 29 to May 1
with instruction sessions for
presidents.
Suggestions for the Year of
the Disabled in 1981 are
requested. The Directors are
urged to promote special
programs in their areas for
sn-
1980 the Year of the Women's
Institute. With words and
actions they are to stimulate
an awareness of the
organization that it will
become more effective as it
strives to improve
homemaking skills, all
aspects of family life to the
betterment of the com-
munities.
