The two football teams enjoyed good seasons. The juniors climaxed a unbeated record Saturday by dow- ning the Goderich Vikings to take the Huron -Perth Conference championship. Saturday's 15-14 win by the junior Panthers over Goderich came in a very exciting contest with the out- come in doubt right down to the final whistle. It marked the second time this year that South Huron had defeated Goderich and by the same score of 15-14. The regular season win was accomplished in a little more dramatic fashion with all 15 Panther points coming in the last five minutes of play. The seniors while losing in the H -P final to Goderich were only beaten by a couple of plays. The big difference in the final were long gallops by Dennis Donnelly and Randy Little for Goderich. The Panthers got back into contention with an ear- ly fourth quarter touchdown. But, any hopes they may have gained were quickly stymied. On the following kickoff Randy Little of the Vikings ran the ball back all the way for a major score. South Huron continued its reputation of being in the forefront in high school cross codntry circles again this year. The midget girls turned in their best efforts ever by winning the WOSSA championship with five con- ferences and 57 schools in competition. The senior boys also won the Huron -Perth title and finished fifth at WOSSA. Heading the local midget girls team was Carla Solomon with a fifth place finish. It was the second best ever finish by a South Huron runner. Kim Postill won the Midget girls title in 1970. Paul Wareing who was the foremost cross country runner at South Huron for the past four years is con- tinuing his favorite sport at the post high school level. Paul was a recent winner of the Fanshaws College intramural cross country run. Another less publicized team at the school is the girls field hockey club. Thanks to the hard work of coach Jim Workman. the South Huron field hockeyists went on through Huron -Perth to finish second in WOSSA competitions. Currently the girls basketball teams under the guidance of coaches Terry O'Rourke and Pat Rowe are turning in their best efforts in many years. The juniors and seniors are presently in Huron - Perth playoffs after posting identical records of eight wins and two losses in league play. The training and dedication needed to be a successful cross country runner is intense and all of the members of the team regardles of their record should be congratulated. This also goes for coaches Joe Fulop and Carey Unich who spend countless hours of after school time in looking after eight teams from the school. We read a recent interesting article from Califor- nia that a number of high schools are now charging their students to play football and take part in other extra -curricular activities. Because of the tax revolt in California, education budgets have been cut drastically and it is now necessary to put a fee on any activity other than basic educational. This year the number of senior football teams in the Huron -Perth Conference was cut to five teams and this may be further decreased to four next season. With a projected decrease of about 25 percent in enrollment in high schools by the year 1985 further cuts in athletic programs could be possible. The other day we talked to a former student at South Huron who wondered out loud if an Alumni association could be formed at the school. He said "I wouldn't mind contributing $25 a year to a fund and this could be used to defray expenses for extra curricular activities including sports." Successful tactics - For the second time in less than a year Harold Ballard appears to have pulled his Toronto Maple Leafs out of a slump by the use of the media in getting his players stirred up. His recent verbal battles with two of his stars Darryl Sittler and Mike Palmateer apparently got the Leafs mad enough to come up with three straight wins. The same thing happened last February when Ballard fired Roger Neilson and then brought him back at the insistance of the players. At that time the team also responded with a number of wins. Ballard has the ability to get everybody stirred up including his players. Sometimes his methods may be questioned, but. they are successful. While on the subject of the NHL, it's great to see fellows like Gordie Howe, Dave Keon and Bobby Hull get off to a good start. It will probably be the last year of on -ice activity for these three fellows, but, they will certainly in- crease attendance around the league. The South Huron Panthers climazed an unbeaten season with a 15-14 win over the Goderich Vikings in Exeter. Saturday. It was the second Panther season win over Goderich by the same 15-14 score and ran the win streaks to nine games. The Panthers reached the Conference final by defeating Listowel 28-0 Tuesday afternoon in the semi-finals. The winning point Saturday came as quar- terback Dave Shaw footed a single on a quick kick. Coach Doug Ellison pointed out several key factors leading to his club's win. Ellison commented, "Our defence stayed cool under pressure at the end of the first half and early in the third quarter to stop Goderich threats and Dave Shaw's kicks took us out of trouble." Goderich was first to hit the scoreboard with a touch- down by Scott Kernighan to climax a surge of 63 yards in 10 plays the first time they got the ball. Dave Mac - Donald's convert was good. Early in the second period, the Panthers hit the scoreboard as Gary Spurn ran the ball over from seven yards out. It culminated a steady drive of 92 yards in 15 plays. The convert attempt failed. Late in the first half, the South Huron defence stopped Goderich on the 12 yard line and they had to settle for a single point as Dave Mac - Donald's field goal try went wide. In the third period, Rob Plunkett of- the Vikings in- tercepted a Panther pass and returned it to the 10 yard line. The Panther i.•:once again came up big stopping Goderich on the one yard line and Dave Shaw': 55 yard punt took the team out of trouble. The next tiri a the Pan- thers got the bail they moved it 45 yards in nine plays with Gary Spurn scr ring a touch- down on a three yard of f - tackle run. Dave Shaw passed to Gary Spurn for a two point convert and the Pantile - were ahead 14-8. Midway thr' ,K ; the final period Coder tied the score as Daze MacDonald passed to And:. The seniors now meet Stratford Central in a two game total point series. The first game will be played today, Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the South Huron school gym . The public is invited to attend. The junior team from South Huron failed in their bid for a conference championship as they lost 29- 20 to Stratford Central. Thursday's win over Goderich was accomplished in come -from -behind fashion throughout most of the game. The locals trailed 19-15 at halftime and were behind by five points with Tess than two minutes remaining in the last quarter. They rallied for seven straight points and won the game 36-34 on Brenda Riddell's dying moment basket. Brenda Riddell led the South Huror team in scoring with 13 points and in defensive rebounds with nine. Helen Muller turned in a strong effort with seven points as well as stealing the ball five times from the opposition. Heather Riddell was next with six points as well as grabbing eight rebounds. Adding two baskets each were Liz Daters and Julianne MacLean. Regardless of the outcome of the Huron -Perth finals, South Huron and Stratford Central will proceed to WOSSA playdowns. The junior game won 29-20 by Stratford Northwestern was much slower and less exciting than the senior contest. The slowness of the game wasduein part to the copious number of fouls incurred for the most part by South Huron. The ability of the Stratford team to sink the vast majority of these foul shots proved to be South Huron's downfall However. the local girls wereable tomore than match the opposition scoring from the floor Faye Gaiser with 10 points was the South Huron leading junior scorer. Next was Maja Gans with four points followed by Lori Brand, Cindy Down and Deb Taylor with two points apiece. Mohawks get split The Exeter Mohawks split a pair of South Huron in- termediate hockey league games this week. In Goderich Monday the Mohawks lost 8-5 to the Goderich Merchants, but. regained their winning ways with a 6-3 Thursday night victory over the Hensall Sherwoods. Tomorrow night. Thur- sday the Mohawks will play host to the Goderich Mer- chants at the South Huron Rec Centre. In Thursday's win over Hensall, the Mohawks took an early 3-0 lead and held that same margin throughout the game. The game was only two minutes old when Larry Bourne counted the first Exeter score on a pass from Marty Overholt. Jeff Fuller made the score 2-0 at 11:13 as he converted a pass from Brad Daters and Brion Penhale scored with passing help from Paul Brooks at the halfway mark of the second period. The t rr st Hensall goal came with three minutes left in the middle session when Brian Campbell scored with the assist going to Murray Connelly In the third period, the Mohawks outscored the Sherwoods be three goals to two Jeff Fuller notched his second goal of the night at 2.58 with assists going to Ron Moore and Brad Daters.
