Volunteer help will be needed
to keep museums open in 80s
The volunteer is going to
become increasingly im-
portant if museums are to
continue to operate in the
1980's. This was the message
to the -museum curators of
Lambton County when they
met at Lambton Heritage
Museum last Wednesday.
Robert Collins, a field
representative of the
Ministry of Culture and
Recreation. told the group
that government money for
museums will become
scarce, and helpers who will
donate their time to the
museum will be needed.
Collins told the group that
the demand for museums
will increase three to four
times over the next decade,
while the population of
Ontario will go up 20 per
cent. He accounted for the
increased need for museums

by saying that there will be
more adults with more
leisure time in the 80's.
There will also be a greater
number of immigrants
seeking to understand
Canadian ht tory.
Collins also discussed the
problems of publicity and
promotion with the curators.
Road signs and brochures
will attract tourists, he said,
but it is also necessary to
bring in local people through
their various clubs and
organizations. He also
suggested such things as
having a museum worker
dressed as a town crier go
out and promote . the
museum. Another
suggestion was the museums
change their exhibits
regularly to attract their
local visitors on a regular
basis.
Bob Tremain, curator of
the Lambton Heritage
Museum jokingly referred to
the meeting as a museum
"summit conference". He
said he invited the other
museums of Lambton
County to the meeting in
hopes of having greater co-
operation between them.
Money could be saved by
ordering supplies in large
quantities and then
distributing them between
the museums, Tremain said.
He would also like to see
exhibits shared, he added.
Representatives attended
the meeting from Mooretown
Museum, Pilot House
Museum in Corunna, Forest-
Lambton Museum, and
Arkona. Indian Artifacts
