A buffet -style dinner was served, and association president Tom Vlemmix was master of ceremonies. Other head table dignitaries in- cluded vice-president Ben Wiendels, secretary Diane Kaak, treasurer Lia Van- denberk, Ben Robbs of the Ausable Soccer Association, Ed Smythe of the Huron Soccer League, Bosanquet Reeve Charlie Srokosz, Grand Bend Reeve Bob Sharen and Lions club representative Rick Sawyers. Coach Brian Morrice gave out gold medallions to all the members on the squirts team. Because there was no organized play for these boys and girls in the age four to eight group. Coach Morrice said that 4it was a houseleague and more like an instructional class. All the soccer players at the banquet were presented with crestg or rule books. and players that were on teams which won the_ championships for the division were each given small trophies. The girls team was coached by Tim Martens, Marg Smits and Teresa Backx. They awarded the trophy for the most im- proved player to Lee Ann Jennison and the most valuable player award went to Rose Vandenberk. The girls team placed second in their division. c1en Hayter took the most improved player award, and Bruce Dietrich received the trophy for the most valuable player in the atoms division. Joe Kaak coached the atoms which were boys in the eight to ten age group. Coach Ed Jeffrey awarded Ivan Chapdelaine the most improved player trophy and Bob Vandenbygaart PICKING UP AWARDS — Joe Mommersteeg picked up several trophies at Grand Bend's soccer banquet Saturday night. Joe wos captain of the peewee team and picked up the team's trophy for the league championship. Joe also got trophies as the most improved player and most valuable player. GRAND BEND AND DISTRICT NEWS Sewer work held up Tenders not called for Grand Bend Reeve Robert Sharen has "no idea when work will begin" on sewer construction in the south side of the village. According to Sharen, the Ministry of Environment has not yet called for tenders on the work to be done on the south side of the Ausable River. Sewer installation is complete on the north side of the village. Workers are now re -paving the streets and restoring sidewalks, curbs, CLOWNS ARE landscape and anything else that was disturbed during the construction. Sandercock construction had the con- tract for that phase of the sewer installation. Sharen said that the main reason tenders have not been called for is because of a hold-up in Gibbs Park. The sewer installation had to be re -designed because two land owners wouldn't grant easements of their property. Because of this, the area now requires a pumping station as opposed to being gravity fed. Sharen said. Because of the re- designing, Gibbs Park was not included in the work done on that side of the river. Now. the Ministry of Environment wants to in- clude it in the tenders with the southern portion of the village. M.M. Dillon consulting engineers will be remaining with the project. CORRECTION Dr. Judith Brigham did not send a letter to the Reeve or Council of Grand Bend as reported in the Times - Advocate on October 3. The letter was sent to the Ontario Provincial Police explaining why Dr. Bfigham would not attendcourt as a witness. Dr. Brigham said that she would not tie present because she knew nothing of .the cir- cumstances, nor did she knob+ the person' being charged. Ed Smythe of the Huron Soccer league also presented Greg Greatrex with a trophy for his out- standing performance on the Huron all-star team. Peewees are boys in the 12 to 14 age group. The whole team received trophies. Grand Bend's bantam team came second in their division this year under coaches John Vanderburgt, Frank Backx and Tony Mennen. The coaches presented each team member with an engraved medallion. Ron Relouw won the award for the most improved player and John VanLeeuwan and Nick Vandenberk shared the trophy for the most valuable player. Bantams are 14 to 16 years old. layers celebrate wins he highlight of the evening was the presentation of trophies and awards to the senior soccer team, better known as the "Colonials". The Colonials topped their league all season and came away with the championship after the playoffs. Tom Vlemmix reminded the audience that this is the first time that the senior team has taken the cham- pionship. He said that in the nine or ten year history of the team, they had finished several times in the second of third position, but this has been the first time they were able to top the league. The team received some stiff competition from Nairn in 'the finals. "It 's the best year we've ever had," Vlemmix said. Captain Bill Vandenberk presented the most. im- proved player award to Bill Vandenbygaart and the most valuable player trophy to Kevin Simmonds. The Colonials never lost a game in the regular season play and the won the mid- season tournament and the Taxandria Invitational tournament. They also received a trophy for finishing the season in first place. The Colonials only lost one game during the playoffs, and this was when several players were away, or off with injuries. A special trophy awarded to the team's goalie Luke Mommersteeg and he was given recognition for being the oldest member on the team. Eddy Mom- mersteeg was also given a trophy for his help during the season.
