Change cemetery rules
A proposal by the ministry
of transporatation and
communication to make a
daylight corner at the south-
west corner of the Exeter
cemetery may be a dead
issue as far as they are
concerned, but it's not an
opinion being shared by the
local cemetery board.
Council representative
Ted Wright said Monday that
the board had spent a con-
siderable amount of money
in making preparations to
meet the ministry's reqeuest
for the daylight corner and
they hoped to regain those
costs even though the
ministry has now decided
against the proposal for the
changes on the Hay Town-
ship concession.
The board will request that
their out-of-pocket expenses
be paid by the ministry.
"We're out of pocket a lot
of money," Wright said,
adding that the board had
been "really let down" by
the ministry.
The board had also figured
that some $3,000 would be
realized in the deal with the
ministry and now that the
money is not forthcoming,
they have had to request an
additional 51,000 in funding
from council. That was
approved by council this
week.
Wright also reported that
the board would instal an
alarm system in the
greenhouse to warn of any
heat failure. He said there
werethousandsof dollars of
flowers in the greenhouse
and the alarm would ring in
the superintendent's house to
warn of any heat failure so
action could be taken before
the plants were endangered.
The price of a single grave
with perpetual care is now
5120 for residents and 8140
for non-residents and the
corresponding prices for
four -grave plots are $440 and
8500.
Ineterment charges
5110 residents
Change rules
and rates
The board has also come
up with a new set of rules and
regulations, as well as some.
price increases for plots and
services. Clerk Liz Bell said
the increases in costs'for 1980
would be about 10 percent.
"We're number one in
cemeteries in the Province
of Ontario. and if you're
going to be number one it
costs you money," Wright
remarked.
Among the changes in the
rules is a stipulation that the
cemetery superintendent be
given 36 hours notice of any
funeral and also that there
will be no Saturday af-
ternoon funerals in view of
the extra overtime hours
required.
Councillor Jay Campbell
suggested these could prove
to be discriminatory against
some religions that require
that the deceased be buried
within 24 hours. He said it
was his understanding that
was the case in the Jewish
religion.
It was indicated that the
local funeral directors had
not seen any problems with
the new rules when they
were asked for comments
and Wright said that the
superintendent and the
board would be prepared to
co-operate in cases where
there were extenuating
circumstances.
Campbell also questioned
who would have the
authority to act on one of the
regulations which provides
that the board could have
any monument removed that
was considered offensive or
improper.
He termed that . "over -
legislation" although most
members agreed that the
board should have the right
to act as they see fit.
"We haven't had any
problems in the past and i
don't expect there will be
any in the future," Reeve ST-
Simmons
i-Simmons commented.
The preamble to the rules
noted that the local cemetery
was established in 1864 and
the first interment took place
on December 3 of that year.

Some 500 feet of drainage
along Riverside Drive,
which was one of the option
items in this year's budget,
will be installed after it was
determined recently that
money will be available for
R.
Roads and drains chair-
man Ted Wright indicated
this week that it had been
hoped to have two prices
from contractors so the work
could be approved at
Monday's session of council,
butonly one price had been
secured to date and the
matter will be delayed until
the next meeting.
Wright said that the local
works department were too
busy to undertake the work
themselves and the job will
be contracted out.
