Despite blowing snow and cold temperatures the girls repeated their performance of a week ago at Huron - Perth. Carla Solomon was the first to cross the finish line for the team in fifth spot. 1 Alice Dietrich came in next in the ninth position with Catherine Patterson following her footsteps in • tenth. Joan Osgood com- pleting her best performance of the year was the fourth team member in with a forty third finish. Susan McClure, Mary Lou Rundle and Judy Van Oss finished in the top half of the one hundred and sixteen competitors. All girls deserve words of praise for placing first out of 20 different schools. The team heads off for Kingston Friday to compete in the OFSAA championship. The strong team of girls should have a good chance of placing in the top ten teams at the all -Ontario meet. The senior boys ended their successful season at WOSSA with a 'fifth place team finish. In a strong field of runners, Murray Wareing placed I4th and Matt McClure came 21st after falling in the last leg of the race. Kevin Easterbrook, Doug Medd, Mike Fleming, Mike Van Raay, Rodney Masnica and Jim Regier all completed the coldest race of the year. Mike Fleming proved to have his best all time race inspite of the weather. Dorothy Van Esbroeck completed the senior girls course in eleventh place. The rest of the senior team Sue Fleming, Sharon Rundle, Sarah McClure, Suzanne Patterson and Lisa Hamather all contributed to the team's tenth position. Cindy Down kept the boards clear with eitcellent rebounding and she also managed to pick ' up 10 points. Faye Gaiser, Leslie Hunter -Duvar and Carrie Sweeney rounded out the scoring. At home last Thursday, the Juniors took an important game from Stratford Nor- thwestern by a 27 ,- 18 score. The game was a defensive struggle and neither team had a high lead at any time. Maja Gans sank 8 points and Faye Gaiser put in 7 to lead the scoring. Lori Brand added 6 points. On defence, Cindy Down again played very well and Jackie Hyde who is one of this year's "rookies" showed much improvement in her game. The. Junior and • Senior teams play their -remaining regular league games at home. On Friday, Seaforth will come and on Monday the visiting teams are from Wingham. Game time is 2:00 pm. Parents are welcome to attend. Senior girls The. South Huron : Senior girls basketball team has had a very heavy schedule -- We'll Do the Job Right... we lately and the girls have been equal to the task. The team travelled to Brighton two weeks ago and split their two tournament games. They defeated Lindsay and lost to Pickering. A good time was' had by all however on this the only overnight trip of the season. The girls then defeated Medway D.H.S. 35-24, and the next day travelled to London and lost a very tough game to Catholic Central 43- 31. Two days later they again lost a very tough game, this time a league encounter, to Stratford Central 40-29. This past week the cagers have scored two very im- pressive wins, defeating Central Huron 41-10, and Stratford Northwestern 41- 20. The teams league record now stands at 5-2 with three games remaining, and their overall record stands at 8-10. Heather Riddell and Helen Muller have been con- tributing most of the offence, and very fine defensive performances have been turned_ in by Heather and Brenda Riddejl .Ronaree Bogart, .Liz Datars and VViiA. irb •1tLearl, Computer course set The computer science night school course is well underway again this year. C.W. Long's class consists of 7 adults from the community and two South Huron students. A cross section of reasons for taking the course was taken at the first class and these range from a new job requirement to help in future potential career. Mr. Long feels that the purpose of the class is to introduce the concept of computers to interested people and to get them used to running them. He also feels that the course is a good way to introduce computers to the people as a valuable timesaving device that almost anyone can operate. It is surprising how many courses in post secon- dary schools require a background in computers. After searching through a few university books I found that even auto mechanics required a computer course as an entrance qualification. So by introducing computers early we can make learning easier later on. to holdan even brighter future. The season could not have been successful or as memorable without the hard work and determination of coach Joe Fulop and Carey Unich. The team would like express their sincere gratitude for their dedication. Reach for the top team still reaches This past Wednesday the Reach for the Top team from South Huron travelled to Wingham to play. The team, composed of Paul Mc- Auley Kevin Glasgow, Doug Hoffman and Matt McClure faced Chesley Matt McClure is the honouree • Mike Burke, student body president is honouring deserving students by posting their picture and a summary of their achiev- ment on the office window. September's honouree was Matt McClure. Matt has been very active this year. He is involved in the newspaper, Reach for the Top, the zoo, the zoo newsletter, cross country, besides doing well in all his classes. I don't know if there is anything to involve yourself with Matt, but if there is I'm sure you'll find it and do it as well as all of your other activities. Now, for the second time here is Mike's applause of Ve-464* 11./ helpful students for October They're Karen Ford, Kim McBride, Robyn McLellan. These girls are typists for the student council. They prepare all correspondence, letters and other important typing duties. They give up class time, often and before school, lunches and the ultimate sacrifice, the oc- casional spare. Without these girls the. student council would grind to a shuddering halt instead of being slowed down with paper work. Good job girls. District High School in the first game. The team demolished Chesley by a score of 175 to 60 -with Hoff- man, McClure and Glasgow giving a good offense effort while , McAuley showed good defensive sense by supplying unique and somewhat bizarre answer to ensure a win. In the second game, the opposition was supplied by F.E. Madill of Wingham. Although South Huron was down by 60 points at one time the team showed deter- mination by rebounding to win by a score of 200-145. The team therefore advances to the second round where it will face Centre Wellington of Fergus. This game will be played after the March Break with the winner ad- vancing to the CKNX finals the air dates for these games on CKNX channel 8 will be communicated at a later date.
