Bantams, pee wees split
Midgets post winning week
The Exeter midgets were
the only local minor team
able to come up with a
winning week, as they posted
two ties and one win in three
outings.
The local bantams and pee
wees split a pair, while the
midget II and atoms lost one
and the novice crew dropped
a pair.
_ The midgets scored
identical 4-4 ties with
Ilderton and Lambeth and
then bombed Lucan by an 8-2
count.
Mike Murray paced the
attack against Lambeth with
a two -goal performance.
Tom Coates and Dave
Underwood added singles.
Murray also had an assist as..
did Pete Tuckey and Coates,
while Mike Clark helped out
on a pair. -
Against Ilderton, Rick
Lindenfield, Mike Clark, Jim
Lovie and Dave Jackson
potted the• goals. Drawing
assists were - Dave Shaw,
Mike Murray and Lin-
denfield.

Underwood and Bill Renning
potted a pair each against
Lucan. The singles came off
the sticks of Mike Murray
and Pete Tuckey. The latter
added an assist, as did Mike

Waxers lose
The local nobice squad
remained winless in
Shamrock action as they
dropped two more en-
counters this week. The lads
couldn't stand prosperity on
Saturday, as they blew a
two -goal lead enroute to a 4-3
loss in Dorchester.
Doug Clark gave them an
early lead On a play with Jeff
Rowe and then Rob
McLelland blasted a high
shot into the net to make it 2-
0. Larry Lewis drew the
assist on that one.
Dorchester whittled the
lead to 2-1 early in the
second, but David Josephson
got that one back on a play
with Jason McFalls.
However, the home crew
then scored three in a row to
–post the win, the last tally
coming with just two
minutes left in the game.

Debut Unsuccessful
The Exeter midget II team
made their first start on
Saturday, but it was less
than they hoped for as they
dropped a 4-2 verdict to St.,‘
Marys.
Goal tender Kevin
Hamond came up with
several big saves as the
Exeter shooters enjoyed a
slight edge in play in the
contest.
Jim Siddall and Wayne
Smith scored for the locals,
with the assists going to
Scott Batten, Kevin Parsons,
Smith and Scott Pincombe.
Pee wees split
The Exeter pee wees split
in their Shamrock play this
week, posting a 4-2 win over
St. Malys on Wednesday and
then dropping a 2-0 verdict to
Lambeth,,riday.
In that loss. the locals were
slightly outplayed, but had
some bad luck around the
Lambeth net as they hit a
couple of posts and were mit-
guessed by Dan Benfield on
several other good scoring
attempts.
In Wednesday's 4-2 win
. over St. Marys, the local pee
wees received some stellar
netminding from Jim Lewis
and Rick Gilfillan.
The Exeter crew jumped
into a 2-0 lead in the first on a
solo effort by Jeff Pfaff and
then a three-way play
finished off by Scott Lovie
with the assists going to
Scott Baptist and Allan Pym..
St. Marys whittled the lead
to a single goal at the 10:35
mark of the final, but Pym
got that one back 20 seconds
later on a play with Lovie
only to have the visitors pull
to within one again a minute
later.
George Pratt finally put
the game out of reach when
he dented. the twine on an
unassistel effort with a
minute and a half left in the
contest.
The winners picked up 10
of the 15 minors handed out
in the game.

St. Marys but then ending up
on the short end of the same
verdict in Lambeth, Friday.
The Lambeth crew jumped
into a 5-0 lead before Exeter

finally hit the sheet in the
final frame when Ted Oke
found the range on a play
with Scott Brintnell.
The bantams appeared to
surprise even themselves
when they posted a con-
vincing 5-1 win over St.
Marys at the rec centre on
Wednesday.
They weren't expected to
be competitive with the
strong St. Marys crew, but
they actually won going
away with four goals in the
third period.
:Hike Tiedeman started
them off with a long shot in
the first period; but the
visitors evened the count in
the second.
Darren Vandergunst
started the third period
onslought with a goal at the
2:59 mark with Chris
VanGerwen and Doug Scott
picking up the assists.
A minute later. Ted Oke
was in the right spot to tip a
centering pass from Steve
Batten into the top corner
and in the final five minutes,
Randy Ford and John
Kernick added insurance
markers.
Drawing assists on the
final two goals were Dave
Hayter and Tiedeman.
Peter Dearing played a
standout game between the
pipes for the locarls.
Atoms lose
The Exeter Broncos
suffered their second set-
back in Shamrock atom
play as they were thumped 7-
2 by London Minor at the rec
centre, Sunday.
The teams traded first
period goals before London
took command with four
straight tallies in the second.
Bryan Quinn and Jon
O'Connor scored for Exeter,
with Ron Loucks assisting on
the latter's marker.

Mohawks get first
win inSouth Huron
The Exeter,Mohawks won
their first game of the young
South Huron intermediate
league hockey season
Thursday night as they
downed the Zurich Buckeyes
by? score of 5-1.at the South
Huron Rec Centre.
The Mohawks next home
game is tomorrow night,
Thursday at the South Huron
Res Centre when the Cen-
tralia College Saints will
supply the opposition. Game
time is 8:15 p.m.
In Thursday's victory over
Zurich, the Mohawks took a
2-0 lead in the first period of
play,
Scott Burton put the
Exeter club on the
scoreboard at 13.04 of the
opening period as he con-
verted a pass from Brian
Taylor' The score went to 2-0
four minutes later as Randy
Gilfillan notched the first of
two goals for the night on an
unassisted efforrt.
Gilfillan chalked up the
only goal of the second
session a three-way passing
combination with Scott
Burton and Brian Taylor.
Gil Latimer of the
Buckeyes spoiled Exeter
goalie John Hater's bid for
a shutout at 3.31 of the third
period. Assisting were Pat
Bedard and John Graham.
Brian Taylor scored the
fourth Mohawks goal at 7.07
of the third period on a pass
from Scott Burton and
defenceman Jim Guenther
completed the scoring at
13.39 as he finished off a
passing play with his defence •
mate Jack Chipchase.
The Buckeyes were
assessed 11 of the 17 minor
penalties handed out by
referees Bill Smith and Carl
Nickles.

Hawks remain winless
The Exeter Hawks remain
winless after four starts in
the northern division of the
Western Junior "D" league
as they dropped two more
encounters this week, both
on home ice.
They were drubbed 12-1 by
the Mitchell Hawks on
Friday night and then suf-
fered a 5-4 loss to Seaforth at
the rec centre on Sunday. -
The Hawks, hit the road
this week, playing in
Thamesford on Friday and
then moving on to Mitchell
for a Tuesday night contest.
The visiting Hawks
dominated Friday's en-
counter between the two
rivals, jumping into a 3-0
lead in the first and adding
four in the second and five in
the third. -
They peppered a total of 45
shots at Exeter netminder
Steve Sararas, while the
locals managed only 22.
Their lone goal came early
in the third when Bryan
Baker scored on a power
play. Dave Kinsman and
Preston Dearing picked up
the assists.
Mitchell also won the
penalty parade with 16 of
the 25 calls going to them.
Rick Ballantyne, Brad
Fischer and Harold Davis
paced the Mitchell attack
with two goals each.
Make it close
The Hawks appeared as
though they may get blown
out of the rink • again on
Sunday as the visiting
Seaforth squad scored three
times in the first 10 minutes
of the contest. -
However, the team battled
back with two in the middle
frame and one early in the
third to move into a 3-3 tie.
Seaforth got the lead back
at the 4:34 mark of the filial
period and made it 5-3 when
they scored on a power play
with four minutes left in the
contest.
Exeter again rebounded
with a short handed effort at
the 17:29 mark, but they
couldn't get the equalizer.
Brad Taylor scored two of
Exeter's goals, with the
singles coming off the sticks
of Dave Atthlll and 'Ken
Varley.
Assisting on the markers
were Doug Fletcher, Dave
Kinsman, Kerry Bedard,
Bryan Baker and Dwight
Consitt.
Steve Wells worked bet=
ween the pipes and recorded
30 saves, while Dan
McClure had 27 at the
other end of the rink.
The visitors drew 17
penalties, while the Hawks
served 16.
