Minor teams only get tie Exeter's minor hockey teams are off to a slow start in the Shamrock hockey league. The local pee wees managed to gel.a 1-1 tie in Oakridge, Sunday, while the other four squads dropped their openers. The midgets were white- washed 4-0 by Belmont in their home opener last week. The hosts scored after only 15 seconds of play, but Exeter rebounded to take a 2-1 lead on goals_ by Chris VanGerwen and John Kernick. However. Oakridge scored twice in the final frame to grab the victory. Brent Atthill and Brent Dawson assisted on the Kernick goal, while,the other was a solo effort. Atoms lose The .Exeter atoms opened their Shamrock season with a 6-2 loss to Strathroy on the tatter's ice Sunday. Marty Smith proved too much for the locals as he potted four of his team's goals in their win. Bryan Quinn scored Exeter's fifst goal to give them a 1-1 tie early in the second on a play with Paul Mellecke, while Steve Lingard notched the other goal after Strathroy had Hensall Sherwod o The Mohawks wil be back in action for their second start tomorrow night, Thursday at the South Huron Rec Centre with the Zurich Buckeyes supplying the opposition. The same night, Centralia College will be in Hensall to meet the Sher - woods. In Thursday's league opener for the Mohawks, the Hensall club took a 3-2 lead after the first 20 minutes of play and were never headed. The game was less than two minutes old when Doug Smifh scored for Hensall on a three-way effort .with Al Taylor and Rick Ingram. About a minute and a half later, Fred Campbell upped the Hensall lead to 2-0 as he completed a passing com- bination with Brian Camp- bell and Steve Knight.. The first Mohawk marker came at 8:14 on a successful shot by Brian Taylor with assists going to Scott Burton and Jim Guenther. Before the first period was half over Rick Ingram counted for Hensall on a play started by Al Taylor and Gary Koehler. Brian Taylor reduced the Hensall margin to a single goal when he counted for the Mohawks on an unassisted effort at 16.51 of the initial period. Only two goals were registered in the middle frame. Both were scored by Rick Ingram of Hensall. The first came on a.solo dash and the second on a pass from captain Jim Ferguson. The Mohawks came back strong in the third period and whittled the Sherwoods lead back again to one goal, but, Centralia Saints split in pair with Goderich The Centralia College Saints and Goderich Mer- chants broke even in their first two South Huron in- termediate hockey league starts against each other this week. Monday in Goderich, the Sailors scored a 7-3 victory and back at the Huron Pack arena Friday night, the College boys were victorious by a score of 7-5. The Saints will be in action opened up a 6-1 lead. There were no penalties in the contest. Waxers drop pair The local novice crew opened their season with a pair of losses, being drubbed 12-0 by a strong Lucan team on Saturday and then coming out on the short end of a 5-1 count on their home ice in a Sunday contest with St. Marys. Mark Ouimet was a one- man show for the Lucan crew as he potted seven goals behind netminders Robbie McLelland and Harlen Tinney. The local eight -and -under lads came up with a better performance on Sunday in losing to St. Marys, another of the league's power house entries. Alan Btommaert scored the lone goal for the Waxers with Doug Clark picking up the assist. twice this week. Tonight* Wednesday they -will be at home to the Centralia Marauaders at the Huron Park arena and Thursday night they travel to Hensall to meet the Sherwoods. Ken Vanos scored three goals to power the CCAT victory over Goderich. Adding single goals .were George Black, Hick Vanos, Jim Coffey and Wayne Riebot. In Monday's game in Goderich, the Merchants took a 3-0 first period lead and went on to chalk up the win. Paul Corriveau, G. Hensen and Cam McDonald were the Goderich' marksmen. McDonald was back to score' early in the second period to put his team in front 4-0. The first CCAT score came at 5:59 of the second session as Ken Vanos converted a pass from Wayne Riebot. Before the second was over, Ken Vanos scored again for the College, this time on .a pass from Dave McFadden and Rolston replied for Goderich. The third and final CCAT goal of the might came in the third .)eriod from the stick of Wayne Riebot on a three- way passing combination with Marty Becker and George Black. The last two Goderich scores were fired by Paul Corriveau and Bowman. that was as close as they could get. Brion Penhale chalked up the first Mohawk score on a play set up by Brad Daters and captain Jack Chfpchase. Bill Van Bergen was on the firing end of the final Exeter goal of the night. Assists went to Don Heywood and Marty Overholt. Steve Knight notched the. insurance goal for Hensall at -17:59 on an unassisted effort. Hensall took eight of the 15 penalties handed out by referees Appleby and Millar. Marauders post win The Centralia Marauders defeated the Grand Bend Mariners 8-6 in South Huron intermediate hockey league game Thursday night. The Marauders start regular play tonight, Wednesday when they meet the Centralia College Saints at the Huron Park arena at 8:30 p.m. Thursday night they will again be at the Huron Park arena to take on the Parkhill Merchants. Game time is 8:30 p.m. The Centralia club took a 4-2 first period lead in their game against Grand Bend and were able to hold that margin. 'Thursday's exhibition was closely contested. Centralia took a 4-2 lead at the end of the first period only to have Grand Bend bounce back to tie the score early in the second period. Two late secondperiod goals for Centralia proved to be the difference as each club scored twice in. the final 20 minutes. Mark. Cronyrl notched two of the four Centralia first period goals. Adding singles were Blair Hearn and Cec Nickles. Ron Funston picked up two assists and one each went to Blair Hearn, Cec Nickles, Dennis Carty and Bill Hodge. In the second period, Randy Somerville converted a pass from Rob Funston and Ron Funston registered on a three-way effort with Pete Wuerth and Matt Muller for Centralia. The final two Centralia goals were scored by Blair Hearn and Randy Somer- ville. Assists went to Rob Funston and Perry Knee.
