Old Denfield store takes on new life
Remember a time %when
convenience meant nipping
out on a cold winter's
morning to purchase fresh
produce at the store around
the corner?
When the big attraction
was not a bright flashing
sign but a warm fire with a
few of the town's elderly
gentlaten discussing the
day's pressing problems?
This atmosphere has been
recreated in a store which
has been part of Denfield for
over 100 years thanks to the
hard work of Willard Green
of London.
Green who calls the store
"the Old General Store" has
his official opening Sunday
which featured the author of
"The General Store", a
new business in the old pine
structure.
"I just happened to come
upon the building," said
Green who had operated a
picture framing business in
the forest city for a number
of years. As one of the
conditions for selling his
business, Green could not
history of general stores in start a picture framinV firm
Ontario. Author Carol within a 10 mile radius of
Priamo officially opened the London.

The building was pur-
chased in January from
Frank Rosser with a
stipulation that the building
be restored.
All renovations were done
by Green over a ten month
period with the exception of
the construction of the fire
place.
The •building has been
restored to an almost
original state including the
pine and maple floor. An
interesting characteristic of
the building is that it has a
built in tilt, something which
has been present since it was
constructed in 1877.
Prior to his purchase the
structure had been used as a
warehouse and TV repair
shop.
Green is a do-it-your-selfer
right up to the roof which has
been shingled in hand-hewn
cedar pieces.
In terms of future
renovations Green said he
might make the upstairs into
some living quarters.
Green's venture is a
general store in the true
sense of the word as he
carries pure grape juice,
honey in the comb, apple
butter and a new product,
apple syrup.
In addition Green will have
for sale home pickled pickles
and peppers which he and his
wife have done.
Ontario grown popcorn,
nuts, sticke candy, local
produce, and antiques can
also be found in the store.
Green will stay in the
framing business and might
add a unique twist; mail
order framing.
The store has a real im-
portance to this Middlesex
community hamlet as
evidenced by the fact that
•
Denfield's centennial
celebrations were in reality
celebrating the anniversary
of the store, since the exact
date of Denfield's inception
is not known.
