BLYTH -EXETER WALKERTON 519-235-1115 Need proper header Soybean loss is high By PAT LYNCH, Soils and Crops Specialist This past two - weeks we measured soybean har- vesting losses in five fields in Perth and Huron counties. Four of these fields were harvested by combines equipped with soybean headers. The fifth field was harvested using a con- ventional grain header. The grain header was leaving three or four bushels of soybeans in the field. -This was two more bushels/acre than the .soybean headers were leaving. These extra beans were still in the pod. The conventional header could not cut low enough. In -terms of extra profit. this amounts to about 515 acre. It only takes a few minutes to calculate harvest loss. If you do it this fall before ploughing, it will give you an idea how much you are losing. The technique is simple. You count the number of unharvested beans in 10 square feet. The area counted must be the length of the soybean header. The width is that dimension that will • give total area of- 10 square feet That means for a 12 ft. header. tile area measured is 12 feet by 10 inches. For a 14 foot header, the area wilt be 14 feet by 8.6 inches. It takes 40 to 45 beans 10 sq. ft. to equal 1 bushel per acre. If your total harvest losses are one to two bushels, there is probably nothing you can do. Harvest losses of two to four bushels are excessive and you should find out why. Avoid Protein Loss • Rumen bacteria convert some of the feed protein into ammonia. But .when too much ammonia is produced. some is wasted. These bacteria or "bugs" create an excess of ammonia when a cow is fed a ration that contains more than 12 or 13 pgrcent crude protein This excess ammonia overflows the rumen and is lost in the cows urine. Average or above average cows need a complete ration that contains 14-16 percent crude protein in the early stages of lactation. But feeding that amount -of crude from the Tractor Specialist Case low profile • high value favorites haat. darts, ts, trusted 221•59 kill it you wars a '.O! ,o' row ',actor dollar animus? nave deo ' 0abd.ty and .n ',Von 3ersalddy y.'.u'an Sof. civ an redu, rernents w th nuc you Can cnOose IrSefu1 power saes wort whin a ',her rue' easy ngn torque engine Tee• acv lob o• sod 3.t uaUnn wan Ina standard , 2 Speed Syn chfomeeh transr*.ss.on moose ophOna, •ange powe' Ina' on modes 1210 and 1430 have a When?, drive wr ,*ode's 995 1210 and 14 !al ,f oil want -I ririn+osd.ner n . th6dtObS uurh JyK sb. It is recommended that dairy farmers not feed non protein nitrogen 1 VPI) such as urea to dairy cows during the first 10-14 weeks of their lactation. Urea is converted Tomato crop yield lower than 1978 "Time ran out for some processing tomato growers, most, howesr, r, made it act;.oss the 11e'." ,That comment was made by vegetable growers' marketing board chairman, Harry Dougall. "Mother nature worked against some of them and, as a result, they did not make their 20 tons to the acre goal," he added. Virtually all of the tomato processors have closed their 1 to ammonia in the rumen, when because of the higher protein ration needed, there is already a surplus of ammonia. Urea can be in- cluded later when the cow can be fed a ration that contains 12-13 percent crude protein. The concentrate used, however, should contain a maximum of 20 Ibs. urea/ton. An amount in excess of 1 percent urea in the ration could create palatability problems or even nitrate poisoning. Cows, also should be acclimatized to urea over a three week period. If urea is added to corn silage to increase the crude protein, care should be exercised in the feeding of urea in the .concentrate. doors for another year. "Stacked up to the last two nears, which were con- sidered excellent, I'd have to describe the 1979 tomato crop as average. The crop from Windsor to Picton was two weeks behind because of the late spring," explained the Huron county grower. Grower problems were compounded in the harvest months because of sky- rocketing interest rates. Carrying an inventory of extra . tomatoes was con- Ki,dered uneconomical by most processors. Therefore, some farmers were faced with the dilemma of growing a fair- sized crop but not being able to deliver it on time. "When the books are added up, this year's processing tomato crop will go down as slightly below the 1978 record crop which had a farm gate value of $35,000,000.00," predicted Dougall. "As the season goes, so goes the frame of mind of the growers and I look forward to hearing their viewpoints at the up -coming round of county meetings," he con- cluded.
