Stays on as OHA contact
Jets manager goes into retirement?
The afternoon of April 26
1970 was the most important
time in the life of the man -
who was f'esponsible for the
organization and success of
the Lucan-Ilderton Jets
hockey team.
Don Urbshott has stepped
down as manager of the Jets
after 12 years in that
capacity.
In an interview Friday,
Urbshott told the T -A "I '1I
never forget that Sunday
afternoon more than nine
years ago when Jim Bender
scored the winning goal in
the second period of sudden
death overtime to give us the
OHA intermediate 'B'
championship."
Bender's goal gave the
Jets the provincial title over
a strong and tough Napanee
club. The game was played
at the Huron Park arena.
With the help of Steve
Storey. Urbshott established
the Lucan-Ilderton Jets in
the fall of 1968 in an attempt
to bring an Ontario cham-
pionship to the two small
communities.
In addition to the 1970
victory the Jets moved on to •
higher company in the new
OHA Continental senior "B"
league and won the cham-
pionship in 1912-73 and 1974-
75.
Urbshott's retirement this
year is only partial. While
giving up the active
managerial duties with the
Jets he will continue to be
their contact man with the
OHA.
About his retirement as
manager. Urbshott com-
mented. "I have had many
good times, met many fine
people and if I had it to do
over again. I'd do it the same
way."
He continued. "I hope I
have had a small part in
giving fans of this area a
good brand of hockey. I'm
sure very few communities
the size of Lucan and.
Ilderton have had the op:
portunity to support a good
senior hockey team."
Urbshott now at the age of
48 played defence for the
Jets up until a couple of
years ago
He reminisced about his
playing days saying, "One of
the highlights of my career
was`playing with a father
and his son. When I started
playing intermediate hockey
at the age of 17 Ken Robb
was one of my team-mates
and his son Jamie was with
us for the last five or six
years of my career with the
Jets. -
On the future of the Jets.
Urbshott said, "I've been
involved long enough and the
club's in good hands with
Pete Loveless as manager
and Bill White the coach.
There should be more local
players available in two or
three years "
On the management
aspect of hockey. l'rbshoU
concluded. "As you get older
you realize how important
managers are to a team. t
think back to my managers,
fellows like Mery Hord and
the late Haney Langford
and Karl O'Neill They felt
as bad as the players when
we lost." '
Despite his retirement,
Urbshott who as known as
"Red" during his playing
days and now referred to as
the "Silver Fox" will still be
involvedin various ways.
His vast knowledge of
hockey and the OHA is
tapped every once and
awhile by other teams and
hockey officials. If a con-
troversy comes up he is often
called on for his opinion.

meeting oriApril 24, 1976 Don

The Exeter Centennial
soccer club ended its minor
division season for 1979 at
South Huron District High
School, Saturday morning.
The club did it with four
games involving parents and
coaches against clubs or
squirt, atom. mosquito and
pee -wee division players.
The games preceded a lunch
and presentation of trophies.
In each of the matches, the
minors were winners.
The squirts beat fathers
and coaches 3-1 in a shoot-out
following a 1-1 tie in regular
time. In that game the squirt
goal was scored by Chad
Miller, with Art Hunking
getting the parent marker.
Squirt marksmen in the
shoot-out were Derek Sch-
wartzentruber, Paul
Humphrey and Said Osman.
Ross blathers collected the
single parent goal in the tie-
breaker.
The Gunners and Bullets,
atom -division clubs, each
won 1-0. The Gunners on 'a

award among pee -wee
-players.
Ron Loucks, captain of the
squirt Gunners, won a
coaches award for ex-
cellence of play, which was
donated and presented by
Chris Bradford.
There were approximately
110 youngsters involved in
minor soccer locally this
year.
In summing up that fact,
club president Ron Helm,
who also doubled as pee -wee
coach. had high praise for
parent support, and for the
work of coaches involved.
The coaches included Frank
Kints, Chris Bradford, Lorne
Rideout, Martin DeBruyn
and George Eisenschink.
The assistant coaches
were Bill Smits, Ron Moore,
Murray Stewart, Barb
Eisenschink, Terry Tilley
and Ken Loucks. Scott
Haseselback and Rich Helm,
who donated considerable
time to officiating games
during the year, were also
recognized with thanks from
the club president.

Urbshott was awarded a
"gold stick" by the OHA for
his efforts in organizing and
stabilizing the C9ntinental
senior league and for
meritous service to hockey
in general.
His wife Elvy is also trying
to retire from active ,duties
with the Jets but, is having a
few problems. She was
pressed back into service a
week ago to look after the
production of the 1979-80 Jets
program.
During the big years'of the
Jets, Mrs. ,Urbshott was
known as the club's number
one fan, cheer leader and
criticizer of referees.
Her attitude towards
referees has mellowed
considerably commenting,
"I'm actually getting to be
good friends with some of
them. They really have a
tough job."
On the subject of violence
in minor hockey Don Urb-
shott said, "I don't think
eliminating body checking is
the answer. Getting rid of the
high sticks would do the
trick.
He continued, "Body
checking is a part of the
game. Remember, there is a
big difference between a
body check and board
slamming. High sticking
causes all of the problems on
the ice."
LADIES GOLF
Edith Boyle, Gail Skinner
and Phyllis Shute were the
winners in Wednesday's
regular ladies golf night at
the Ironwood golf course.
