Home My WebLink AboutTimes-Advocate, 1979-09-19, Page 23 (2)• Parking lot problems still plague council • • Concern about the conflict between council and Main street businessmen over the cost of the parking lot still played a major role in Monday night's meeting, even though Reeve Sharen withdrew his resignation. The reeve resigned last week when Main Street businessmen refused to say they would pick up any deficits which the new parking lot might have. Sharen was not present for the meeting but councillors discussed the parking Bantams win league final The Grand Bend Bantams soccer team finished off the season in fine style by winning the league finals Saturday. The Bantams beat Goderich in a game played in Sarnia to be the champs. Coach Tony Mennen says that they were theunderdogs going into the game, and that Goderich had beat them 3 to 2 the last time they met. But this game resulted in a t to 1 win for the Bantams. Nick Vandenberk scored twice, while Paul Andrews took one goal for the victory. Mennen says that there was a good effort by the whole team. The senior team,. The Colonials trounced Lucan 8 to 2 as they continued their unbeaten streak. Dave Nolan scored four goals, while John Vandenberk, Kevin Sim- mons. Bill Vandenbygaart, and Bernie Kelders all took singles. This marks the end of regular league play for the Colonials, and they stand at the top going into the playoffs. The Colonials were not beaten all season. They scored 56 times in the games, with only 20 goals against them. Next week they meet Huron Park in the play off opener. conflict. "I don't see any deficit, but people are so touchy in this town,." Councillor Bill Baird said. Councillors disagreed as to whether the parking costs should be split equally among all 46 Main Streeet businesses, or split proportionately according to benefit from the lot. Council agreed that a maximum limit such as $50 should be put on the costs, so that businessmen could be assured that they would not have to pay off a high deficit. Council decided to give the matrer further attention before a letter is sent out to the businesses on Main street. Harold Gibbs' name came up at the meeting again when a letter was received from his lawyer saying that Gibbs refuses to pay a bill for $120 that council sent him for destroying noxious weeds on his property in Gibbs Park. Council decided to confirm the billing with the weed inspector to make sure that their procedure was correct, and then to continue billing Gibbs. Council received a letter from Laverne Fischer complaining about the parking and littering problem around the Mac's Milk and Baskin-Robbins stores. Fischer, who lives nearby, wrote that it was not only customers littering near the stores, but the garbage set out by the businesses that was "cluttering the neigh- bourhood. Councillor Harold Green said that the parking problem had been alleviated with the posting of "no parking" signs. However, councillors agreed that the garbage was a problem. Fischer sent along a photograph to illustrate his complaint. Council decided to send a letter to Mac's Milk. Liquor fines will increase A spokesman for the Pinery Park detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police announced that due to a sharp increase in liquor licence act offences in the Pinery Area, the Provincial Court Administrator has ruled that all liquor offences will carry a $103 penalty. During the week of Sep- tember 9 to 15, the Pinery OPP laid 11 charges under the liquor licence act, and nine under the highway traffic act. Four people were charged under the provincial parks act.
