Jim Freeman named
• Shamrock loop prexy
Jim Freeman. Lucan was
elected president of the
Shamrock Minor Hockey
league at a meeting, Sunday, -
in which merpber centres
voted unanimously to oppose
a motion at this week's
Ofl'IHA annual to eliminate
body checking for atom and
novice divisions.
A special committee had
s►i been established by the
Shamrock league to consider
the rule change and their
recommendation to oppose
the ban on body checking
was quickly approved.
Contact men from- the
centres in the league noted
that violence in hockey was
not evident in the league,
although one member
suggested referees would
probably clamp down more
this season on any
roughhouse tactics in view of
the controversy raised
recent-ly by the Ontario
Hockey Council survey of
parents.
The league agreed to have
all delegates to the OMHA
annual oppose the ban on
• bodychecking. Centres
represented by the
Shramrock group include
Exeter. Lucan. Ilderton, St.
Marys, Strathroy, Lambeth,
M t . Brydges, Dorchester,
Belmont and Port Stanley.
, There are also voting.
'delegates from Oakridge
Acres, East London and
London Minor Hockey
Association.
Dave Grant, Lambeth,
was elected vice-president
and Harvey Patterson, Port
Stanley, is second vice-
president. Bill Batten of
Exeter was returned as
secretary -treasurer.
New entries to the league
this year are Port Stanley
and Mt. Brydges and the
league will be divided into
two divisions.
Exeter teams will be
competing in a division with
Strathroy, St. Marys,
Exeter. Lambeth, Oakridge
and LMHA in most
categories.
Lucan and Ilderton will be
in the "B" division with
Belmont, Pt. Stanley, Mt.
Brydges and East London.
Cy Blommaert is Exeter's
representative on Shamrock,
while Lucan is represented
by Don Hugill. Don Medd
returns as Ilderton's rep.
The league will hold a
hockey seminar for all
coaches and managers in -
Dorchester on October 28
and the league schedule is
expected to begin in mid-
October. '

H ern gets
hat trick
Right-winger Al Hern
fashioned a close hat trick
for Exeter Centennials' 3-2
win over Forest in Ausable
Soccer at Canner's field
Sunday.
Hern split his trio with a
hard goal -line shot at 30
minutes=of the first half off a
corner -kick from midfielder
Murray Stewart. At. 10
minutes of the second he took
advantage of a broken
defence to send in his second.
Then, at 65 minutes, game
time, he converted a pass
from midfielder Rene
Kirmse into a third goal.
Forest scores went in aff a
scramble at 56 minutes by
Rick Vanos, and their second
from a ricocheted ball from
a free -kick taken by Dennis
Smit at 70 minutes.
Forest played extremely
well against the Centennials,
and perhaps could have gone
home with a draw.
But Exeter worked an
edge against the Forest
defence with some brilliant
and unselfish off -the -ball
running by centre -forward
Martin DeBruyn. One of his
fine runs opened the defence
for Hern's second goal.
Others spread the Forest
defence for tries at goal by
midfielders Gerald Weer -
sink, Lorne Rideout and Dick
Lord. Defensively, too,
Exeter was solid with Tony
Markus, John Rasenberg,
Mike Janyu, Joe Laurie. and
goalkeeper Al Beattie. -
Exeter, coming .off an
unusual 7-1 loss the previouS-
week, seemed overall to be
returning to thoughtful
soccer. •
