Safety hunter course
Skeet, trap good practice
By BILL McNUTT
Trap and skeet are two of
the best ways to practice for
the upcoming bird season.
Trap shooting is great
practice for pheasant
shooting as it gives you
rising shots going away from
the shooter. This is the
general rule in pheasant
shooting.
Skeet shooting is the best
all round practice as it gives
you shots at every possible
angle including targets
flying toward you. This is the

best game to practice up on
for the water fowler, but is
also good for the pheasant
and grouse hunter.
The cost of the prastice
rounds is generally 81.50 per
round (which is 25 targets).
At most clubs now you have
to supply your own shells.
If you are interested in
only practise for hunting,
any shotgun will do, and of
course its best to use your
regular hunting gun.
Trap is shot at longer
ranges than skeet and is
basically a 12 gauge game.
The most popular skeet gun
is the 12 gauge but is a good
game for the smaller gauges

Magnum or high base
loads are definitely not
required for either game and
7'2 shot is best for trap with
9's taking top spot for skeet.
There is no age limit to
those allowed to shoot, and
no licence is required, solt's
a good place for a beginning
shooter to start.
It's very surprising what
an improvement you will
find in your shooting after
only four or five rounds,
especially if skeet shooting.
Don't be afraid to try
either because it looks hard.
There is no doubt that it's not
easy but neither is hitting a
passing wood duck.
There is one thing for sure
though, after a few rounds of
skeet, that wood duck will be
a lot easier to hit.
There are four local skeet
or trap ranges, the Kippen
gun club on highway 4, north
of Hensell shoots trap on
Monday nights. Fullerton,
about .a mile north of that
, hamlet, shoots Wednesday
nights and every other
Sunday.
The claybird gun club
located in Hay township
Concession 5, shoots trap and
skeet on Sunday's and
Wednesday nights.
The South Huron Sports-
man's Association located
on Highway 83 about three
miles west of Exeter offers
skeet every Saturday af-
ternoon.
There will be a hunter
safety course starting
tonight at 6:30. It will be held
at the Crediton fire hall and
anyone is welcome. The cost
of the course is 810 and is
required for anyone under 21
who wishes a hunting
licence.
The course will run 6:30 to
10 tonight and Saturday from
9 a.m. to 1. As said before
tonight is at the Crediton fire
hall but Saturday's class will
be held at the South Huron
Sportsman's Association
skeet range.
Students must attend both
classes and are not required
to bring guns but those
wishing to shoot a round of
skeet will be allowed to bring
a shotgun and shells to the
Saturday class where they
will be instructed in the
fundamentals of the game.
