SWEDISH YOUTHS AT HOCKEY SCHOOL--- Bengt Svangard and Anders Magnusson.

Huron Park for the past two weeks T -A photo
Two Swedish lads at school
to learn hockey and English
With the ever increasing
popularity of hockey on an
international scale, it's not
surprising that there is some
cross pollination of ideas and
techniques.
An example of this cross
pollination is the attendance
'this past week at the Huron
Hockey School at Huron
Park of two young hockey
players from Sweden.
Anders Magnusson and
Bengt Svangard. both 15
have been in Canada for the
past month attending hockey
schools at Elmira and the
school at Huron Park.
Both boys are typical - of
what one sees at a hockey
school after their session on
the ice is finished with the
only difference being that
their tee-shirts praise the
virtues in Swe.• ' a

The boys live in Vox o a
city of 60,000 470 kilometres
south of Stokholm and are
involved in that city's minor
hockey program.
Magnusson explained that
he and •Svangard became
aware of the Huron Park
operation _through - their

The young men who have
been playing as a defensive
unit for the past five years,
said they came to Canada to
improve their hockey and
their English. which is a
second language in the
Swedish school system.
Asked for a comparision of
their hockey abilities to the
other boys in -the camp both
young men agreed it was
easier to play against United
States hockey players than
against the Canadians. Brian
Walters a director of the
hockey school said. the
Swedish young men were in

excellent physical condition
but lacked knowledge in the
finer points of the game.
In terms of financing their
four week trip to North
America both lads said they
paid their own way with
Magnusson saving the
money he earned while
refereeing this winter.
Highlights of their stay in
Huron Park have been a trip
to Bowling Green University
in Ohie and to Grand Bend.

other side of the pond,

players such as Lemaire and

In terms of hockey
equipment, Canada is still
supreme with Canadian
made hockey sticks
dominating the European
brands such as Koho. "Koho
breaks too easily,"
Svangard stated.
Prior to a photography
session, the boys apologized
for having Koho sticks in
their possession, the only
brand which they said they
could find on a sojourn to the
south of the border.
