HomeMy WebLinkAboutTimes-Advocate, 1979-07-25, Page 23 (2)Police investigate shrimp theft The theft of $100 worth of food from the Fisherman's Cove in Grand Bend is still being investigated by the Ontario Provincial Police. Early last Wednesday morning thieves broke a window at the restaurant and gained entry. Police believe that an escape was made by water because much of the food, including packages of frozen shri►np, was found in the harbour. The boat was missing from its dock in the Ausable River. The theft of the boat and motor valued at $2495 is still under in- vestigation. Last Thursday the Pinery - detachment of the OPP investigated the theft of 16 gallons of Furadan weed killer. It is contained in white plastic one gallon bottles and is extremely toxic if breathed or ingested. Christmas celebrated at Library Christmas was celebrated in July at Grand Bend Public Library Monday. Par- ticipants in the children's library program were busy decorating a Christmas trre, making life size Christmas cards, and breaking a pinata. Matt Goldhawk of War- wick and Lorrie Sutherland of Strathroy organized the program for children, which has been held at the library for the past three Monday mornings. The two leaders are working for the Lambton County Library under a Young Works grant. About 10 children have been active in the program for each session. The children are mostly summer visitors in Grand Bend. system Canada Sailing Continued from page 1A throughout Ontario doing the week long sessions. There are four other units like them. On Friday nights they head home to Toronto. They laugh about moving in the opposite directions to everyone else --they leave the resorts and go to the city on week ends. Both young men have been teaching sailing for several years. The sailing school was brought to Grand Bend through the work of Sharon Steciuk and the co-operation of the rec committee. Anyone knowing where it might be located is asked to contact the OPP. If found, the public is warned not to touch it, and asked to call the police. Damages were estimated at $1500 in a single car ac- cident on Lambton County Road 3 near Grand Bend July 15. A, car driven by Montgomery MacLean of London skidded off the road and hit a sign. Both MacLean and tiis passenger Elizabeth Brooks were treated for minor injuries at Stralhroy Hospital. A car owned . by Todd Desaulniers of Grand Bend was the victim of a hit and run accident. About $600 damage was done to Desaulniers' car while it was parked at The Tenderspot. Grand Bend OPP laid 39 charges under the liquor license act during the week of July 15 to 21, while the Pinery charged 35 people. The Pinery OPP charged 25 people under the provincial parks act, and two under the narcotic control act. One impaired driver was charged. Sergeant J. Crighton of the Grand Bend detachment has asked that visitors be reminded that seat belt laws are applicable in Grand, Bend. Art works to be auctioned at evening celebration A gala evening is in the offing at the Huron Country Playhouse on Sunday July 29th, at Grand Bend. The Third Annual International Art Auction, whose proceeds will benefit the Playhouse, will attract many art lovers and collectors. A representative group of outstanding Canadian artists will be featured together with well known European and American artists. Works by Ken Danby, Robert White, Picasso, Dail and Chagall are being offered. A selec- tion of forty well-known artists will be offered, with a briefing by a very knowledgeable auctioneer. The viewing will start at 5 p.m. followed by the auction which begins at 8:00 p.m. Price of admission is $5.00 which includes the catalogue and a chance for a draw of a silver necklace. There will be no admittance without a catalogue. A "Build Your Own Sandwich Bar" will be available on the premises throughout the evening. Museum The Lambton Heritage Museum is erecting a se- cond farm machinery building for the housing and display of agricultural im- plements from Lambton's past. The new building will be 60' X 100', and will have maintenance -free siding. Total cost of the building will be covered by a large donation from the Richard Ivey Foundation, a second family bequest, and a matching grant from Win- tario. Once the new museum opened in May 1978, many large implements were offered from around Lamb - ton County. The original farm building at the new museum site quickly became full. Lambton is such a predominately rural County that the buildings tell the major story in..the region's development. Inside the main museum building another new exhibit is in the making. The con- struction of an Industrial Display area - is being fund- ed by a donation from Discount Dave's — Conkli Lumber. The exhibit will outline the various pioneer industries of Lambton County, such as salt, lumber and oil, and pay particular attention to woodworking tools, barn framing, and similar con- struction methods. Conklin Lumber has Bishop Sherlock recovering from bike accident Bishop John Sherlock is still in a London Hospital recovering from head in- juries he received when he fell from his bicycle in Grand Bend last Tuesday. The 53 year old man is bishop of the Roman Catholic diocese of London. Bishop Sherlock was vacationing at a cottage when the mishap occurred He is expected to remain in hospital for at least another week. and will probably not resume his regular duties for some time. financially supported the exhibit because it relates specifically to their business and services. It is hoped that this, the second Conklin donation to the Lambton Heritage Museum fund drive, will set an example for corporate sponsorship of museum exhibits. The new Lambton Heritage Museum is located south of Grand Bend directly across from Pinery Provincial Park. Soccer The Grand Bend Senior soccer team trounced West Williams Sunday 5 to 2. Bill Vandenbygaart and Tony Mennen each scored two goals, with John Mennen adding a single. The "Colonials" will be playing next Sunday in Taxandria Tournament in Arkona. Games start at 1:00 p.m. Neither the Peewees nor the Bantams played this weekend due to lack of op- onent s.
