Renewed interest
Canada to import cattle
Renewed interest among
Canadian cattle breeders
had led to plans for a large
shipment of continental
European cattle to Canada
this year after nogimports
for more than two years.
Agriculture Canada's
Health of Animals Branch,
responsible for seeing that
animal imports are disease-
free. reports that Canadian
farmers have applied to br-
ing in 230 head this fall.
"The applications merely
indicate intent at this
stage." according to R.R.
Miller, director, import-
export for the animal health
directorate of the branch.
"Some will undoubtedly
drop out. but we could end
up with a shipmc+ni of
between 120 and 170
animals."
Such a shipment could be
worth $1 million or more.
The import applications
cover a variety of breeds
from six countries - Italy.
West Germany. France.
Switzerland, Holland and
Austria.
The last shipment from
the continent came in the
fall of 1976 after a decade of
substantial imports begun
Green beans
are favourite
Among Ontario's delicious
fresh vegetables. green and
wax beans are one of the
most popular favorites with,
many people. They're mild
and pleasantly flavored,
they're available all
summer until frost and
they're versatile.
Many areas in Ontario
grow beans. but the majori-
ty of beans sold on the fresh
market come from the
Hamilton -Wentworth area
and southwestern Ontario.
As well as being sold on the
fresh market. many of the
fresh beans go to be process-
ed, both for canning and
freezing.
when Canada felt secure
enough from a disease
standpoint to permit con-
tinental cattle into the coun-
try. Canada opened the
doors to continental cattle in
1965.
Rising beef prices in
Canada have helped create
the renewed demand as
Canadian breeders seek to
strengthen the quality of
their herds and improve
bloodlines. Applied -for
breeds include Charolais.
Limousin. Simmental.
Blonde d'Aquitaine and
Abondance from France.
Chianina and Marchigiana
from Italy, Fleckvieh and
Pinzgauer from Austria and
West Germany.
The potential importers,
numbering more than 60 at
this stage, are spread
throughout the country. In
effect, the animals for im-
port are spread, among
many buyers. No single im-
porter is especially promi-
nent in terms of numbers.
Dr. Miller says the usual
strict inspection -testing
quarantine procedures will
be followed to prevent foot-
and-mouth and other dis-
eases from entering the
country in the imported cat-
tle.
Foot-and-mouth incidence
in Europe remains low. In
addition, cattle destined for
Canada in this shipment will
be tested for this and other
diseases on the farm of
origin. After that. the cattle
wilt be kept in isolation until
they are shipped to Brest.
France for 30 days quaran-
tine and additional tests
prior to shipment by.boat to
Canada's Grosse He quaran-
tine station in the St.
Lawrence River.
Barring anything unusual.
the cattle- will -spend the
winfer in quarantine at
Grosse Ile and will end upon
Canadian farms next spring
almost a year hence. It's a
long process made
necessary 6y the anti -
disease precautions.
The Canadian importers
must make their cattle
selection for import by July
15. an extension from the
earlier -deadline of July 1.
