They refused to -support are being put in for the
Green's motion that the
church be exempt from this
ruling.
These lots are also the
frons yard of the church's
manse, and.enjoyed by Rev.
Moore and his family.
At, last council meeting
Leroy Keyes attended on
behalf of the church and
asked that the church be
exempted• from the ruling
which states that all
buildable lots must have
liewer connections. -
Keyes was told to go back
to his church and have them
reconsider the request.
Council felt that the chureh
should install the sewer
church building and the
manse.
Rev. Moore says that,dhere
are "absolutely no plans
whatsoever" for building on
those lots. They will continue
to be used as a park -like
setting for outdoor church
services, he says.
At the council meeting,
Reeve Sharen suggested that
the church won't be at that
location much longer. Many
downtown churches in
Toronto have moved out, he
'says. And a church in
Stratford is now a
restaurant, he add,ed.
But a. -church in Grand.
Bend is a far cry from one in
Toronto, or even Stratford.
Rev. Moore says' that the
church has had a steady
increase in members over
the past four years. There is
no reason to believe the
membership won't continue
growing and the building
won't be there, he says.
Grand, Bend United Church
has been in use for 52 years,
and it will continue there for
at least another 52 years.
Services held outdoors - in
summer have been a
traditidh for 75 years. Before
the present area was used,
service was held on the
beach. Many of Grand •
Bend's visitors return each
summer to take part in the .
outdoor worship, under the
cool, greentrees. It won't be
pleasant to see this well -kept
area torn up to install sewer
connections which are
totally unnecessary.
Reeve Sl,ren suggests

problem to the church. I'm
sure that the church would ' ,
have a much better use for
$700 than unnecessary sewer
hook-ups.
In the past governments -
federal, provincial and yes,
nujnicipal--have given
churches various benefits. -
Exemption from taxation
has been a • long-time
tradition
Green made the motion
that the church be exempted
from the mandatory sewer
hook-up knowing that he
would not get a seconder. He
wanted his opinion to be a
matter of record. Rules are
made to be broken and
council has the power to
make exemptions, he says.
I think he's right -and I
hope council will reconsider
the church's request.
You don't have to be crazy
to work here, but it
helps.
