A re- ception and dance was held at Hen- salL Visitors with Mrs. Irene Schlenker were cousins Lorne Fah- ner from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Health Topics by Lynn Garrison Nutrition Consultant, Huron County Health Unit To salt or not to salt Canadians eat too much salt. But where do we get this taste for salt? It may be that it develops during infancy. According to a report by the Infant Nutrition Institute, newborns and infants up to the age of four months arc indifferent to the taste of salt. When offered water with different amounts of salt in them, babies showed no preference for the saltier ones. However, this was not the case wiCl babies be- tween the ages of four to seven months. These babies preferred the saltier water. Between the ages of four to seven months may be a critical time in which the preference for salty foods develops. Developim; this prefer- ence for salty foods could be the beginning of a potentially unhealthy eating pattern that may affect some people's health. Certain people arc "salt -sensitive " and eating too much of it increases their risk of developing high blood pressure. Introducing table foods to your infant too soon, may start your baby on a lifetime habit of excessive salt intake. Thi is because popular finger foods that are easy for an infant with few teeth to eat arc also loaded with sodium - for examfle sausage, ham, luncheon meats and cheese. How can you avoid this problem as babies between the ages of four and seven months (the "critical time") are most likely being in- troduced to solid foods, it is important that they be give -i only low - salt foods. Serving commercially prepared infant food• or making your own baby food from fresh or frozen vegetables and fresh, cooked meats, fish or poultry, without adding salt, are good choices. ' Highly salted foods should be avoided throughout the entire first year of life. After infancy, salt intake should continue to be moderate in order to help establish long lasting good eating habits. Exeter Vitra EXETER - The Senior Citizens started our week off with their monthly Bingo. We had a good turnout despite it being the holiday. Victoria Day turned out to be very warm and sunny and the rest of the week seemed to follow. It has been nice to sit outside and watch the construction in every direction around us. The Lodge Resident Council met this week. One of the topics of dis- cussion was Seniors' Month. June is Seniors Month in Ontario. The theme this year is "Opportunity is Ageless". We began plans for our Hot Dog Day and Bake Sale on June 25. Watch for more details later in June. We had no church services on Wednesday last week. However we did enjoy a hymn sing instead. We look forward to having our regular service this week. Birthday wishes this week go to Gladys Haynes. Thought for the week: Let's learn a lesson from tea. It shows its real worth when it gets into hot water. EXETER - Rosemary Schaefer of Kirkton was hostess for Alpha Tau Chapter's of Beta Sigma Phi pot- luck dinner on'May 25.
