Trout on my mind
I've been tortured by fish in the last two weeks.
I know, fish don't really rank up there with the Chinese water tor-
ture or bamboo under the .finger nails. But they've been getting to me
none: -the -less.
A week ago I was on hand to see 600 trout placed in the reservoir
.at Morrison Dam. They ranged in size dramatically. The smallest
werc just a little bigger than the ones 1 usually catch and the largest
were the kind of fish 1 only dream about.
Watching thein go into the water from a tank truck via Ausaublc
Bayfield Conservation Authority buckets destroyed my. biggest ex -
c use.
It's the one I always use as I slog back to my car in leaky hip wad-
ers: "There's no (expletive deleted) fish in theregnyway." It always
works. It always makes me feel just a little bit_better. I blame my
failure as a fisherman on the ravages of pollution in Southern Onta-
rio and think wistfully of the day when I can go after the big one in
the northern reaches of this province.
Six hundred trout.
I think you can sec what that docs•to the. big excuse.
On the weekend, the Exeter Lion's Club, the Ausaublc Bayfield
Conservation Authority and the Ausaublc Bayfield Conservation
Foundation sponsored their annual fishing derby out at Morrison
Dain. 11 was tough to find a good spot unless you showed up just
before sunrise. The reservoir was shore -to -shore people bristling with
fishing poles, of every description. Some brought boats -- canoes,
row. boats, paddleboats -- you Millie. it.
I brought my camera. I didn't have my fishing gear in town.
That's where the torture comes in. I spent the day taking pictures
of people catching fish and 'while, it's a fairly good assignment to
have as those things go, it was pretty depressing watching beautiful
trout coming out of the water on the end of someone else's line.
Corey Burtch inflicted the most pain on me when he brought a
trout just shy of 17 inches to the record table. That (ish stood as the
winner for the day and Burtch was named Grand Champion.
There were some other good fish landed-at/he dam on Saturday.
Randy Van Dorsselacr pulled in a -trout just over 15 inches long and
Corey Sargeant caught one which was over 13 inchefi.
With all the fish corning out of the reservoir, I'd be willing to
speculate that there were some hearty trout dinners being served in
kitchens all over the arca. I don't know how hungry the fishermen
were though. The Lions scrvcd up 48 dozen hot dogs over the course
of the day. .
Thcrc were many.notable catches, most of which are listed_else-
wherein the paper. But my personal favourite was a catch made by
Brian Dallas, aged nine. He was awarded with the smallest fish
caught on a hook. It was a two and three-quarter inch shiner.
Brian and I are going to have to get together some day and swap
fish tories.
