for a vacation from their work in Ethiopia with the Christian Blind Mission.

Stanley ends year with surplus
STANLEY TOWNSHIP - Stan-
ley township ended the 1987 fiscal
year with a surplus of $6,538, au-
ditor Eugene Bender informed mem-
bers of Stanley township council
when he attended a regular April
session to present his report. Bend-
er said the township's books and fi-
nances seemed to be in good order,
with no apparent problems.
Tax arrears for 1987 were 15.1
percent, up from 11.7 the previous
year.
Clerk Mel Graham will be work-
ing with much larger figures when
he starts drafting the 1988 budget
and setting the mill rate. The mar-
ket value system means the total
assessment figure this year will be
$89,000,000, compared with a
1986 base of S3,697,223 for 1987
taxes. Last year the residential rate
was 99.2 and this year Graham pre-
dicts a rate of 4.3. Under the old
system, one mill raised $3,697,
while under the new system each
mill raises 589,000.
Graham expects the municipal
share of this year's taxes to be up
5.5 percent, but has heard that the
education levy has jumped 13 per-
cent. He doesn't yet know what
amount the county will set as its
share of the taxpayer's dollar.
Graham hopes to announce the
budget and the 1988 tax rate in ear -

course. The possibility of purchas-
ing a bulldozer was also considered.
