Clean up highlights high school recognition
If you looked out onto the streets
of Exeter Thursday morning and no-
ticed all those little swirls of gar-
bage had disappeared, you have the
students of South Iluron District
High School to thank.
. -Sixty students, divided up into
groups of five and six, picked up
1,446 pounds of garbage in a single
hour Wednesday morning when
they blitzed the town in one of the
many planned activities for Fduca-
t►Vw1E -
"We just wanted to choose some
sort of activity to say thank you to
the community for all they have to
put up with throughout the year,"
organizer Donna Garvey said, ad-
ding that students contribute to a
good portion of the refuse. -
Exetcr was divided up into a grid.
system and each group was assigned
a section to clean.
The group which collected the
most garbage in the alloted time
was promised a free pizza lunch,
but organizers were so pleased a itt►
the reSponsc to the sweep, they
have since decided to provide the
free lunch to all who tcx)k part. Ac-
cording to quick calculations by
SHDIIS principal Bruce Shaw, the
pizza to be consumed may weigh as
nructr as the garbage collected.
Patrick Ducharmc, Craig Miller,
lan Verbeek, Rich Gingerich and
Jeff O'Brien made up the winning
squad. Covering area in the cast cor-
ner of Highways 4 and 83, they
brought 1-I bags of garbage weigh-
ing 245 pounds back to the school.
The second place team was only
four pounds short of the winning
haul

ning group ill receive special pins
