Area elementary and secondary schools
Exeter and Usborne public schools officiary re -opened
Official re -opening ceremonies at
Exctcr and Usborne Central Public
Schools highlighted their recogni-
tion of Education Week, Wednesday
night.
Auditoriums were jammed to ca-
pacity at both schools as Huron
Board of Education chairman John
Jewitt presented plaques to "say
thanks" for their untiring efforts in
getting the schools back in busi-
ness after the disastrous hires of late
August.
At Usbogne, Jewitt presented the
plaque to principal Bill Stephenson
and leacher Cathy. Hugill. Vice-
principal Larry Black accepted the
award at Exeter Public School on
behalf of principal Al Taylor and
staff.
Also taking part wcrc Director of
Education Bob Allen, arca trustee
Bea Dawson and board plant manag-
er Mike Rau along with a number
of other officials from the board of-
fice in Clinton and Exctcr Mayor
Bruce Shaw.
All had high praise for teachers,
custodians and so many people in
the community who offered to help
clean up and find accommodations
'for the students when classes
opened on time at the beginning of
September.
This week superintendent Paul
Carroll told the T -A, " The board
wishes to thank the entire commu-
nity for the support we received. It's
a real positive feeling to know the
community was behind us. It was a
real good partnership."
Carroll continued, " We can't
mention everyone that deserves
thanks, but we would like to point
Out the custodians who went well
beyond the call of duty and to the
teachers and their spouses who also
helped. While we were able to take
advantage of a nuniber of offers to
use space for classrooms, there were
many others who offered facilities
to us. This included the business
community of not only Exeter, but
the surrounding area"
On cost of renovations, Carroll
said, " We expect: to have final fig-
ures determined in the next couple
of weeks. Right now it ItAs like
S1.4 million at Exet+r and
$225,000 at Usborne. it both
schools we had S10,000 dcwctible
clauses, in our insurance Ixlicies.
With extra unspecified cots of
about. S100,000- which incudcd
some updating, the final cost n the
board should be about 5120,(0." •
Carroll concluded, "Our rant
-manager Mike Rau was the keyco-
ordinator in keeping the rcnovaing
program going."
Students of both schools sent bal-
loons up in the air on the Monday
of Education Week to get activities
underway.
The first balloon sent up from
EPS arrived in Hamilton only 90
minutes after liftoff and was re-
trieved by R. Williamson. Others
were picked up by Linda DcBruyn
at Salford, south of Ingersoll and
Michael Croft, also of Hamilton.
