Small, tall, sturdy, delicate -- Great Bodies comc in all sizes!! And
now, you can sec if your present size falls into the healthy weight
zone. After all; its our health that's important, not our size.
As part of Nutrition Month, the Canadian Dietetic Association and
Health and Welfare Canada are promoting the use of the Body Mass
Index (B.M.I.) as a tool for assessing whether or not a person's weight
is a risk to his or her health. The Body Mass Index is determined by
dividing a person's weight (in kilograms) by their height (in metres),
squared. If this sounds too complicated, simply use the accompanying
chart.
If your B.M.I. is less than 20, you may be underweight. Being un-
derweight can be a risk to your health. Problems may include nutrient
deficiencies, lowered resistance to infection, chronic fatigue, anemia,
or complications of pregnancy. A B.M.I. of 20 to 25 is considered
healthy. The 25 - 27 range is believed to be the upper range of nor-
mal, but may Icad to health problems in sonic individuals. a B.M.I.
over 27 is associated with increased risk of health problems such as
heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. If your B.M.I. is un-
der 20 or over 27, it may be a good idea to consult a dietitian.and phy-
sician for advice.
Be aware that B.M.I. is not for cvcryone. It cannot be used with
children or those under 20 years, with adults over 65, with pregnant
and lactating women, or with muscular individuals.
But remember - it's not just the B.M.I. number that counts. It's still
important to cat properly according to Canada's Food Guide, and get
regular exercise. Be healthy and feel good about yourself.
