Zurich council discusses
new development plannin
The first hour of the regular
April meeting of Zurich council
was an in camera session with
Goderich lawyer Dan Murphy and
engineer Bruce Potter from B.M.
Ross consulting engineers. This
was a follow-up to a special meet-
ing on March 11 between four of
the five members of council and
Mr. Valentino Aimola from CaI-
Mar Inc., Markham, and his solici-
tor,. Mr. Allan Goldman. Aimola
is in the process of purchasing the
Mario Sirotec property in the vil-
lage with the intention of proceed-
ing with development of the subdi-
vision.
Hydro, water and general provi-
sions to be incorporated into a sub-
division agreement were discussed
at the special meeting. As well,
B.M. Ross was appointed engineer
to act on behalf of Zurich in nego-
tiating and supervising subdivision
works to be performed by Cal -Mar
Inc. Murphy, from Donnelly and
Murphy, Barristers, was appointed
village solicitor to negotiate subdi-
vision agreements with the devel-
oper.
Two motions pertaining to the
matter were passed at the Thursday
meeting. One established impost
fees of $200 per lot in any new
subdivision, payable when a build-
ing permit is issued. The other
stipulates that council requires a
letter of credit for the full amount
of costs of services prior to the
signing of a subdivision agreement.
In other business, Reeve Bob
Fisher asked councillors what
should be done about the decrease
in the education levy created by the
change to market value assessment
whereby urban areas will pay less,
and townships will pay more.
Councillor Herb Turkheim said
the village doesn't keep the educa-
tion tax, just collects it. Council-
lor Ray McKinnon added that peo-
ple have complained for 50years
about taxes. and "it's not moral or
proper for us to grab this
Fisher suggested that members of
council get the opinion of Zurich
ratepayers on whether to lower taxes
or leave the general mill rate un-
changed and keep the extra revenue
for other commitments.
Councillor Keith Semple reported
that works superintendent Dennis
Regier is getting ready for the pow-
er sweeper from Exeter next week.
He passed on Regier's request to
change his working hours for the
summer to 7:30 a.m. until 4:00'
p.m. with only 30 minutes off for
lunch.
Reeve Fisher said he had received
many favourable comments about
the sidewalk edging done by Regier.
Councillor Paul Morrison report-
ed that a busy summer lies ahead for
the ball diamond. The arca is to be
spruced -up, and this includes mov-
ing the fence back 15 feet.
