Kentucky north Continued from page 3A takes the horse out onto the track and jogs it for two miles, then turns and docs "a slow double-header". In a double-header, thc horse runs the mile distance in three minutes, comes into the stable to rest for three-quarters of an hour, then goes out and runs the mile again at a slightly faster pace. Parsons notes that the horse usually shaves about ten seconds off the time it takes to run the mile in the first part of the double-header. With the day's work done, the horse comes in for a bath and a rub- down. Parsons says that most trainers in the area stick to the double-header format, though some have now by Exeter Minor adopted a form called interval train - on their respective ing which varies slightly. Schwindt. Front row, Parsons, who has been around horses all his life, took up training full time two years ago after having open heart surgery. Before that, training had been his hobby. While he has never driven the horses, he works with them behind the scenes with the help of his daughter Lisa. Parsons started out raising jump- ing horses as a young man and then switched to quarter horses. Eventu- ally he began racing ponies -- a popular diversion in the arca at one time. Parsons bought his first standard - bred horse, called "Knight -a -Gone", in 1973 and has since raised 12 of the horses. Like Rcvington, Parsons finds the going tough in the modern world of harness racing. "For the fellas in this arca, we've got to have an awful good race horse to go to the jockey club (at Greenwood and Mohawk Race- ways)," Parsons says. • "They're breeding thc horses so well now that thc horses arc getting so fast -- the small operator is up against it now." Changes to tracks in the arca have also taken thcir toll on thc racing life of a good horse. "Some horses might race five years for you. Some might race tcn. It all depends on soundness," Par- sons says. "It's hard to keep a horse sound now -a -days. They keep the tracks so hard so the horses will go fast. We have a lot of problems with soundness now." For Parsons, as it is for Rcving- ton, it is thc promise of a "million MOST IMPROVED -- Exeter Minor Hockey recognized the most im- proved players of the 1987-88 season at their annual awards ceremony Sunday.
