After falling behind Lambeth
Lancers two games to none in the
Junior D Ontario final,- Exeter
Hawks have turned around and giv-
en their opponents two black eyes.
Friday night, Hawks fought their
way back with a 4-3 win at the
South Huron Rec Centre. They fol-
lowed that up with a 3-2 victory
Sunday in Lambeth.
Exeter manager Dan Brintnell
noted the team was finally breaking
rebound, tie OHA final
through the Lambeth defence which
had previously stalled Hawks offen-
sive efforts.
"We're sending one guy in deep
and then lining up the two forwards
in behind him," Brintnell said, ex-
plaining that the technique keeps
the Lancer forwards hemmed in.
"They're faster than us and we're not
allowing them to get wound up in
their' own cnd."
That forward thrust, combined

'with some sturdy goaltending from
Dave Rook and Derrick Martin, has
put Hawks back into the series with
a vengeance.
Rook kicked out 33 shots on goal
Friday night. Martin, who replaced
a vacationing Rook Sunday, put
forward an excellent effort, facing
47 shots and allowing- just two
goals.
Martin will likely start in net for
the remainder of the series.
Brintnell sees Exeter's neuninding
depth as the key to the series with
Rook gone and Lambeth's number
one goalie, Brian Morris, out with -
injured ribs.
"Their (Lambeth) problem is now
they don't have as much confidence
in their back-up (goalie) as we do
in ours," the manager said Monday, •
adding that Junior B scouts have
shown interest in Martin during the
playoffs.

CLOSE BUT NO CiGAR -- Mark Morrissey gets leveled by a Lambeth in the OHA All -Ontario series. Morris has since been put out of Lancers
player after getting away a good shot on Lancers goalie Brian Morris during Zine -up because of injured ribs. Game five begins at 8:30 tonight (Wednes-
a recent game between the two clubs which are currently locked in a 2-2 tie day) in Exeter.
Battered ohawks fabehind

"The boys arc all hockey'd out."
That was Exeter Mohawks man-
ager Doc Campbell's assessment of
his team's problem after they
dropped game two of the best -of -
seven series against Crcemore
Chiefs 9-4 Sunday night at the
South Huron Rcc Centre.
Adding Sunday's debacle to a 3-0
loss Friday night in Crcemore, Mo-
hawks now trail two games to none
in the semi-final.
It's not that they don't have an ex-
cuse.
Mohawks skated into their 61st
game of the season Sunday night.
They're fresh from two brutal Hardy
Cup series which took their toll in
injuries and on emotions. But a
semi-final loss to Crcemore after
the stellar season Mohawks have
enjcyed would be no way to finish
the year.
"1 think it (Sunday's loss) was a
little unexpected by myself as well
as many, many other people, in-
cluding the fans and the players,"
said coach Jim Guenther Monday.
"We've got a serious problem in
the scnsc that the hockey team just
seems tobe burnt out."
When the'team went into action
Friday night -- just three days after
returning from thcir New Brun-
swick Hardy Cup series against
Campbellton -- Mohawks were
missing Mark Sochncr, Randy
Kraul, Jeff Warren, Mike Zoretich,
Dale Timmcrmans, Dale Gibbon
and Rob Mackie from thcir line-up.
Timmermars, Sochncr, Warren
and Gibbon were back for Sunday,
but the team was obviously hurt-
ing.
Kraal is done for the season with
a broken jaw and Zorctich went
into surgery Monday to repair a
cracked check bone suffered in
Campbcllton.
"These last two weeks have just
been grueling," Guenther said. Put-
ting Lanark -out was like the semi-
finals and going to Campbellton
was like going to the final.
"They're just mentally drained.
On the ice last night they showed
it."
A big part of Mohawks Hardy
Cup splendor against Lanark Flyers
has also been removed from the
picture. League pick-ups Paul
Kalbfleisch, Kevin Konings and
Jim Roberts, only eligible to play
in Hardy Cup action, seemed to
leave a hole in the squad when they
left.
That factor doesn't concern
Guenther.
"There's an adjustment that has to
be made," he said. "But this is the
team that got us here and this is the
tcam that's here now. So we've just _
got to pick up and go as best we
can."
Friday night Crcemore took a 1-0
lead in the first period on a goal by
Mark Hannon. Hannon Scored again
in thc second. Bob Parker notched a
single to bring the score to 3-0.
Sunday night, Mohawks trailed 2-
0 at the end of thc first on goals by
John Matthews and Parker. By the
end of the second, Matthews had
built himself a hat trick and Scott
Jackson and Steve Lyle had singles
to thcir credit.
Exeter failed to get more than two
good shots on net in the first.
Mohawks showed some sign of
life when Quincy Wilkcr scored
from Dave Randcrson and Sochner
at 12:37 of the second.
In a three minute span midway
through the third, Bill Glover, Tim-
mcrmans and Randcrson pumped in
goals, but they were quickly
matched by Steve Scott and Darrell
Hughson with two.
Assists on Exeter goals in the
third went to AI Gates, Kris Bedard,
Wilkcr and Paul Barton.
Veteran defenceman Barry Bayn-
ham said Monday Mohawks need
some time off.
"I think probably this week off is
really going to help us," Bayniiam
said. "The guys are hurt a bit and
we seem emotionally and physical-
ly not quite on it.
"The old A5-35 is taking a beat-
ing, I'II tell you that."
Baynham noted Mohawks may
have approached the Crcemore ser-
ies too confidently.
"Our feeling after losing the first
one up there (in Crcemore) was that
they weren't as good a team as
we've been playing lately and we
took them kind of lightly.

TOUGH NIGHT -- Exeter Mohawks goalie Rick Pikul had a busy night hawks lost the game 9-4 to trail two games to none in the best -of -seven
Sunday at the South'Huron Rec Centre..Fronted by a weary squad of Sen- Senior B semi-final.
br B hockey players, Pikul faced more than his share of shots on goal. Mo -

Brintnell was puzzled over the
shortage of 'fan support Hawks
seem to be suffering. A crowd of
roughly 300 people were in atten-
dance for Friday night's game at the
South Huron Rec Centre. In the
past, Ontario finals have drawn
considerably larger crowds.
"For an all -Ontario (final), it's
sure been quiet," Brintnell said,
noting the fan support is very im-
portant to the team. He expressed
'this hope that more people will
show up for tonight's (Wednesday)
game.
Hawks 4 - Lambeth 3
Lambeth's Jeremie Brooks put the
puck in the net at 6:01 of the first
period Friday night while Exeter
was short-handed, but Hawks wer-
en't about to let their opponents get
out of reach. Just 26 seconds after
the opening goal, Jim Lewis scored
from Brent Murray to tic the game.
Lancers were again able to capi-
talize on a power play when Scott
Pepin scored at 16:01.
'Hawks kept things tight but were
unable to match that goal until
6:10 of the second when Jeff An-
sems converted a pass from Mark
Morrissey and Murray.
Morrissey then put Hawks into
the lead for the first time in the ser-
ies, scoring at 13:20 from Steve
Gould and Anscms.
Lambeth wasn't about to roll over
and die, however. A goal by Tom
Kcenlysidc tied the game 3-3 as thc
teams entered the third.
At 11:08 of - the third, Sean
1.Vhiteford earned his keep for the
at two
season, scoring from Clarke Singer
to give Hawks the win.
Hawks 3 • Lancers 2
As in Friday night's match, Sun-
day's game was marked by low
scoring and fast -paced hockey.
Martin played well in net in thc
first, holding Lancers to one goal
which came at 13:24, answering a
power play marker from Scott Lo -
vie four minutes earlier. Singer
earned the assist on Lovie's Boal.
This time; however, Hawks didn't
take long to establish the lead.
With three minutes remaining in
the first, Gould connected with An-
sems to make it 2-1 in favour of
Exeter.
Sports
In die second period, Lovie scored
again while Exeter had a man ad-
vantage, this time from Gould and
Murray. That turned out to be the
winning goal.
Lambeth's Howie Thompson
scored at 7:39 while Exeter was
serving a penalty, keeping the game
close.
In the third, Lancers pounded
away at the Exeter net but Martin
held them off, kicking; out 21 shots
in a single period.
Hawks meet Lambeth tonight
(Wednesday) at the South Huron
Rec Centre at 8:30 p.m.
