'Positive Parenting' course at Exeter United Church
Philosopher -prophet Kahlil Gi-
bran took dead aim at parents when
he said "You arc the bows from
which your children as arrows are
sent forth". Many parents worry
that because of their unpracticed
hand or unskilled aim their off-
spring may land far from the bull-
seye, or miss the target altogether.
Parenting is one of the most im-
portant - and most difficult - of all
jobs, as well as one offering little
pretraining. Fathers and mothers.
usually learn by trial and error how
to be good parents.
For those who would like to
have some questions answered, Ex-
eter United Church is hosting a
one -day workshop on positive pa-
renting on Saturday, April 23 at
the church.
The focus will be on positive
discipline in the morning session.
The central question will be "Is it
really possible to gain responsible,
cooperative behaviour without
spanking, criticizing or excessive
grounding?"
PARENTING - Barbara Burrows, who will be leading the Positive Parent-
ing one -day workshop at the Exeter UC on April 23, displays a copy of the
newsletter for parents she publishes five times a year.

Parent-child conflict will be ex-
plored in the afternoon. Ways of
building self-esteem for everyone
in the family will be presented,
based on the precept that nobody
has the right to take out anger and
frustrations on others in the fami-
ly.
The one -day course is an out-
growth of the church's "Time Out"
program. Staff associate Bev Ro-
binson found that mothers dis-
cussed many parenting -related is-
sues as they met for two hours
each Friday morning. Typical sub-
jects that came up were wondering
if certain actions were normal to a
specific age, how to maintain a
child's sense of self-worth while ap-
plying discipline, and what behavi-
our to expect as a child progressed
through various stages.
The workshop will be led by Bar-
bara Burrows, founder and director
of Positive Parenting based in Bur-
lington. (Burrows and Robinson
have been friends since the days
both were counsellors at summer
camp.) Burrows, who is trained in
sociology and psychology, has been
leading parent groups for six years.
She is also a consultant with Fami-
ly Services in Halton County, and
publishes and distributes 5,000 cop-
ies of a. Parent -to -Parent newsletter
five times a year.
Respect is at the heart of positive
discipline, according to Burrows.
"Every one of us, regardless of
age, responds best when treated with
respect", she maintains.
The course is suited to parents of
children of all ages, as "respect is a
principle for all age groups".
Some children need a gentle ap-
proach, and others need boundaries;
the essence of parenting is to un-
derstand the needs of both child and
parent in order to decide how a cer-
tain situation would best be re-
solved. Continuation of the wrong
disciplinary method can turn an ad-
venturous 20 -month-old into a re-
bellious, out -of -control four-year-
old, while recognizing a child's hid-
den needs and extending him respect
may be the answer to power strug-
gles and temper tantrums.
Parents frequently misunderstand
what is motivating their -child's be-
haviour. When the option chosen
is ineffective, parents become frus-
trated and discouraged, and their ac-
tions and their children's reactions
become cyclical.
Elaborating on the afternoon ses-
sion, Burrows stated that all fami
lies have conflicts. Hostile feelings
are normal. Inability to control
them, or acting them out, is not
normal.
Burrows hopes the day will ex-
pose parents to new ideas, food for
thought. She trusts they will leave
with new insight, enthused and
motivated to make improvements in
their situations.
Just discovering that others have
similar problems, that you are not
alone, is reassuring. Even more re-
assuring is discovering that profes-
sionals like Burrows (who has three
children of her own) are there to en-
courage and help.
The cost of the course is $15 per
person for the full day, and $10 for
either the morning or afternoon
workshop. The comparable charge
for couples is $25 and S15.
